Which pitcher hit the 500 HR ever by a pitcher and also served up Hank Aaron's 500 HR?

I cheated and googled Hank Aaron, it would have been a while before I guessed the pitcher although he had a great season the year before in 1967.

I want to push back as far as possible the date the pitcher hit the HR, because that number sounds shockingly low to me for the entire history of baseball. So it would have to be someone who was a veteran by what, 66? 67? I'll guess Drysdale. Or maybe it was Roberts on the Astros.

Actually seeing Cliff's response just now it can't be Roberts. Drysdale's big year was 68 I think not 67?

Had no idea until I saw the "great year in 1967" quote. Only 2 guys had outlier great years in 1967 (JL & MM), and one of them pitched in the AL. So I'd be confident in guessing MM of the SFG.

That makes sense because he started in the mid 50s and the HR he hit could have been early in his career. Still weird to me that there were so few HR by pitchers to that point, even if you start in 1920 and omit the deadball era that's what, 150 per DECADE? 15 per year. So roughly 1 per team per year.

McCormick is recognized as the player who hit the 500th home run by an MLB pitcher. He was also responsible for giving up Hank Aaron's 500th home run. Because of these two feats, he personalized his license plate with the words "Mr. 500

1967 was the first year that the Cy Young award was given in each league.
The AL winner is recently retired dentist. |
