I am new to this site but far from new to the card collecting scene. I mainly collect graded HOF cards from Baseball & Football but I also have Topps set runs from 53-61 in Baseball and 55AA-60 in Football and a Bowman set run from 50-55 in Football.
My question is this: What will a nice mid-grade set of T201s cost me? I am 27 and the company that I work for contributes 20% of my gross compensation to a 401k style of retirement plan with no cost to me. I plan on saving back $300/mo towards this T201 goal. I appreciate any input. Matt |

According to Bob Lemke's new Standard Catalog of Vintage Baseball Cards a VG set would cost $2650, EX $7000, and NM $25000.

If you save $300 a month, you could probably achieve your goal in about a year. From recent auction prices, I would think $3600 is in the ballpark. Depends on your definition of midgrade.

I'm 2 cards shy of the goal (both commons) for a midgrade set. I think I'm in the 3.5K range.

The T201 is probably the best set to collect if you're a beginner in vintage card collecting. The cards are plentiful and if you're patient I think you can complete a mid-grade set for around $3K. Take your time and try to get your cards under book value on ebay. It is absolutely possible to put together this set for a reasonable amount of money, IF you are PATIENT.
Good Luck!

Well, with the arrival of the T201 Lajoie/Falkenberg, my quest to complete the T201 set is done! I started on 10/9/11 and finished 2/27/2012! All cards are PSA graded and range from 1 - 4.5. I will probably gradually upgrade the 1's but for now I am glad that it is done.
I was able to complete it at just under $1,850.00 and I have 14 duplicates that I am going to sell to start on the T202's & T200's. I will post scans later on this week. Matt |

Congrats! My favorite set. I finished mine a few months ago. What do you have in duplicates. My graham/Mattern was trimmed and I haven't upgraded yet.

Personally, I think it's one of the best vintage sets out there! The background setting in each card really takes you back to the origin of the game and the set is loaded with hall of famers. I don't understand why it isn't worth more. I know that collectors say the player likenesses aren't there but I think they look pretty good and I have started a set myself. My goal is to get each card in a PSA 4-5 holder.
