Looks like the Rose Co. postcard in Goodwin is actually Joe Doyle and not Larry Doyle (wrong NY team listed on card like the t206). I know the Buster Brown card also has this same error (actually showing Mordecai) and Jerry previously figured out that the Davis is George Davis, but was mislabelled as Harry Davis by SGC. Does anyone know of any other "labelled as one guy, but actually shows another" in the Rose Company postcard set?

It's definitely a different back...
Here's an ad from the March 7, 1909 NY Sun where they are talking about all of the same products. Were these sent out to stores that would possible carry their products or were they point of sale on the counter when you went in to buy some chocolates? ![]() Last edited by Jaybird; 01-18-2012 at 11:21 AM. |

looks like Greenfield's sponsored a number of non-sports postcards as well, here's one on ebay...
but still not sure the exact link between them and the Rose Company or why so few Rose Co. postcards have the ad back. |

you're famous Brian... (from the Old Cardboard eNews email)
4. News Briefs (A Digest of Recent Hobby Happenings) Wrong Doyle Pictured on Rose PCs. Reader Brian Terjung has noted that the Rose Co. postcard labeled "Doyle, New York N.L." is not Larry Doyle, who played for the New York N.L.. It is actually that of Slow Joe Doyle, who played for the rival New York A.L. at the time the cards were produced. The error has been added to the Mislabeled Cards Checklist in the Old Cardboard Reference Library. Other labeling errors in the set are also noted in the checklist. |

Jerry, do you have any other ad back cards you can show? I did a search on here and found this one from Mike from the pickup thread in November but wondered if you had any others...

The majority of the Greenfield ads on Rose Co. postcards that I've seen are the type Jason posted. The only other type is the one posted above by Jeff.
Most of the Greenfield ad postcards I've seen were not postally used making it impossible to detect the time period that they were available for purchase. However based on the three that I've seen that were postally used - two dated in 1909 and one dated in 1912 - they may have been on sale for three years - or longer - or not. There may have been a long wait between buying and using the 1912 card - not enough evidence. But the Rose Co. did sell their baseball format front postcards for a year or more after the baseball player series ended in the fall 1909. Beside the Greenfield ads on Rose Co. postcards there were other ads and greetings overprinted on RC postcards by vendors. Except for the Springfield postcards it would be much appreciated if anyone would post images of other overprints on the Rose Co. postcards. |
