What year is the E102 set?
I've seen some PSA flips that say 1908 and some that say 1909. Any help would be appreciated! |

That's what I thought as well. E102 are 1908 and E101 are 1909. You would think it would be the other way around.

The E102 set was not produced in 1908. I think that the earliest that it could have been produced was at the end of the 1909 season and possibly not until 1910 or later.
Dots Miller did not play for Pittsburg until 1909. Unless the set was created sometime in late 1909, I think that it was probably introduced at the beginning of the 1910 season. Germany Schaefer was traded from Detroit to Washington (his pictured team) in August of 1909, so this would be the earliest date that the set could have been issued. David Shean was traded from Philadelphia to Boston (his pictured team) in July of 1909. Last edited by Baseball Rarities; 09-14-2011 at 02:31 PM. |

Thanks for clarifying this Kevin. I don't know why I always thought it was 1908 as well.

Matt - I do not have any reason to think that the E102 set was not issued at the same time as the other sets that you mentioned. As far as I know there are no team changes within the set to indicate that they were issued at different times.
As you know, the E101 set has a total of 50 subjects. The E92 Dockman set utilized 40 of these subjects. The E92 Croft's Cocoa and Croft's Candy used all 50 subjects. It seems as though he E92 Nadja set not only used all 50 subjects (not sure if all have actually been seen), but added an additional 12. Finally, the E102 set used 30 of the subjects. Lew Lipset originally stated that he thought that these sets were issued in 1910 and I have no reason to disagree with him. I have no idea where the 1908 date came from. It probably originated with an old timer's want list and was copied over the years by all of the guides and publications. |
