Default May 2011 Pickup Thread

Figured I would get the May thread started. I just got home from my day of treasure hunting out in Adamstown PA, and overall I was happy with the day.
The first item I picked up is a very early Spalding Table Tennis set, with a beautifully decorated lithography box lid (The box looks alot better in person than my iphone could capture). The set has all of its pieces, including 2 neat ping pong paddles that have the Spalding mark embossed onto the silver metal portion. After some quick online research, I believe this set could date to 1896 and seems pretty rare.
Next, I picked up this massive display bat that is made of several different pieces of wood. The seller told me they believe it was a store display piece. It is a huge bat, measuring about 42 inches, and weighs 83 oz.
Lastly I picked up a small 19th century figure 8 ball that is missing leather in some areas, and a Jos. Zacko Sporting Goods brand baseball bat. The reason I picked up the Zacko bat, is Zacko was very involved with the Pottsville Maroons, supplying the team with all of its equipment, selling tickets out of his sporting goods store, and was a Maroons super-fan of sorts.

Glad to check this piece off my Tommy Bridges wish list. Not in working condition though so I still have my eyes open for a complete working game. The color of this one is amazing though.

Default Won on Ebay

I collect various tickets stubs. One set I am looking to complete is 4 homeruns in one game. Was able to win this unused season ticket from Mark Whitens 4 homerun game in 1993. Not always easy to find, even for a newer ticket.

Default Old Judge Cribbage Board

Has anyone ever seen one of these? I bought it from someone in Australia - he thinks it is from the states. That sure could be - but maybe England? Anything? Either way - I'm happy to own it.

Default 1912 Football Calender LSU?

Just got this tonight. I am not 100% sure if it is LSU until I do some research on it. The building in the background looks like a building that was on the old campus, and the lady is carrying a purple and gold pennant(they put ladies like this on the inside of the yearbooks as well).

I risked the money, but I believe it is LSU

I had a calendar just like that except it had a picture of the Army team.

Default 1986 McGwire Game Used Bat

Very rare 1986 McGwire game used autographed bat. He came up in August of '86 so not many gamers around. Rawlings/Adirondak last year for this label. Knob has year code on it. Shows awesome use. Maybe one of his first 3 homeruns on it??? I've been after this one for a while.

Thanks to Travis Wise for a great transaction....

I am efforting to become a no-wallet guy. I have found that my aging behind is large enough without a billfold in my back pocket. I wanted a distinct money clip and Travis helped me find one that really fit the bill. It is a premium that was given to members of the 1959 California League All Star team. This one belonged to Nolan Campbell, a utility infielder who played 12 years in the minors who also became a manager. Mr. Campbell holds the distinction to be the first manager to be thrown out of a professional baseball game by a female umpire. He played all nine positions on the field in a single game twice in his career. He was born in Weedpatch, Cali, which is also pretty cool. Cost me $30 which I think is a bargain.

The other day, I was looking through the clearance section at the local used book store, my typical rummage for cheap sports books. Picked up a handful of books. One of which was "Slick" by Whitey Ford. For $2, hell yeah. I normally wouldn't even bother mentioning the books, but it gets better. I open the damn thing up, and it's f*cking signed by Whitey. Quite possibly the best $2 I've ever spent.

Anyways, my total haul over the past few weeks has been(all hardcover with DJ)

Barnstorming to Heaven-$7(not clearance)
The Ken Burns Baseball book-$5
The Curse of the Bambino-$2
Now I can Die in Peace-$2
Say Hey-$2
Jackie Robinson:A Biography-$2
Out of Bounds(Jim Brown)-$2
Fumble:The Browns, Modell and the Move-$2
Clint Eastwood:A Biography-$2(I know it's not sports, but ya gotta love Clint)
and of course the signed copy of Slick-$2

I've got a lot of reading to do...Anyways, halfway through "Barnstorming to Heaven". It's a great read so far. I would definitely recommend it..
