First, he is an honest, forthright fellow. A good guy from the old school. Prices are about reasonable... I sometimes think they're a bit high, but I live stuck in the past, so I'm probably wrong on that. Accurate grading and identification, I'd think that anything you're not happy with you could send back. And I think there really is a physical place, I recall photos of it in his paper catalog several years ago. I'd think it is still in existence. But it may well not be open to walk in traffic.

I have had nothing but great transactions and service from Wayne. Excellent scans, excellent communication and fair prices for BINs. I highly recommend him ...

I too have had many dealings with Wayne. His prices on lower grade are spot on and higher grade run good to reasonable. His service is great and will always scan fronts and backs if you request it. Never had to return anything but I know he would do it no hassles. Highly recommended.

Default shoebox

Shoebox has and still is among my favorite people in our industry.
Wayne and Bill are hobby pioneeres whom I'm proud to call my friends.
I'm sure we all have something a bit pricey but overall their prices are fine.
I thank God for our many years of friendship!

They used to be on Rt 19 just south of Zelienople, but that location is now empty. That is a 30 min drive up 79 from downtown Pgh. I think they are still in the area. If you call them, I'm sure they will be helpful. Wayne and Bill are top notch. You should make the trip if at all possible.

Default Wayne and Bill

Wayne and Bill are two of my favorite guys in the hobby. I always enjoy spending time speaking with them. We have usually managed to have a meal or so together at the National too. Great guys and great for the hobby. They will work with you on pricing a little bit too. Just ask...they are friendly. If they can't do it then they will politely tell you that too. If the whole hobby were made up of Wayne and Bills it would be a more wonderful place.

Default Polite Folks

I've bought a few cards off of them at the National over the years and have thought their prices to be fair and in line with the prices at the time. I personally don't know any of the men and women who work their booth each year, but they are VERY polite and professional with you as a customer.

Wayne and Bill are two nice, fair and honest people, beacons of light in this hobby we enjoy. They stand behind everything they sell, are accurate in their grading, and are a pleasure to work with. Next time I'm in P'bgh I may take a detour to visit their shop.

Cheers, Mike

Other than the fact that he's a Steelers fan, I love the guy and have done many deals with him. A+ service and highly recommend him. Prices are good and I've always been willing to pay them. He's a good negotiator, and will play the negotiation game, whether buying or selling. I thought he told me they closed the retail operation a few years ago. He's easily reachable by phone and always returns my calls promptly.
Scott.

I've known Wayne and Bill for almost 30 years since they had a store on Banksville Rd in Pittsburgh. If I am not mistaken they are now around Zelienople. Great guys to deal with and hope to see them at the Robert Morris Show.

Hi Bill. Glad you are posting regularly on the board again

As far as Wayne and Bill, I would echo the sentiments above. I have purchased cards from them at both National and through their web service and have spoken to Wayne on the phone. They are always very courteous and I have always been satisfied with the transactions. I know that if I buy a card from them I never have to worry. Their prices are reasonable but they are always willing to listen if a card might be priced a tad high. I give them very high marks and would never hesitate to buy from them.

Default hi, gang!

"Hi Bill. Glad you are posting regularly on the board again -- from TBob"
TBob, you made me smile~~~~ You are a great friend!

Hi Gang,
My daughters bought me a shirt that says:

RETIRED
Knows everything
and has lots of time to tell you all about it......

Hoping I got a laugh out of you! My story is about the first time I met Wayne and Bill from Shoe Box. We all converged on the lounge at the Strongsville, OH (Cleveland) show run by legend Clayton Pasternack. Till this time, I only knew of Wayne and Bill by name. I sat up at the bar next to them and we had a few cocktails while watching an NCAA FB game. After a few minutes, they noticed my Boston accent and we introduced each other. I was sitting with 2 legends of the hobby and we we're later joined by Denny Eckes, Bob Thing, and a virtual who's who in our hobby.
I was shocked that these hobby icons talked with me about cards, sports, etc.., I was invited to join the crew in the hospitality room that night. What a night, lol, with Bob Lemke and the boys from SCD, and more legends! Bill Zimpleman was kind enough to give me the list of "it shows" that the big boys did regularly. I consulted my traveling companion, Bob Thing from Maine, and we made plans to set up with this elite crew in St. Louis, Plymouth, MI, Sharonville, OH (Cinn), plus all the regular East Coast shows we normally did.

I'm sorry for the long-winded post, but the point is that these fine guys (Bill & Wayne) made it a point to make me feel like one of the crew, and they made it a point to introduce me to EVERYONE. And, not that it's a huge deal, but they made sure to introduce me as Bill Hedin (pronounced Ha- deen) to everyone. What a grand time it was for sure!

Bill Z and Wayne V are top notch in my book! Always treated me right, sold me cards fairly and bought some cards with a decent offer. The hobby needs more guys like them!

about 8 years ago, at the SF show, Wayne asked to see my want list. He spotted a card on there he'd seen at the show, and in the middle of a show left his table alone to walk thru and find the card on my list he'd seen on another table. I tried to give him a finders fee, tried to buy him coffee, he declined everything. Pretty typical of him.
He and Bill are two of the nicest people you'll meet anywhere, in or out of the hobby.

Default Shoebox Cards

How can you possibly knock Wayne Varner's shoebox cards? Unquestionably, Wayne and Bill are two of the most respectable men in the hobby as well as first class acts. Every one of my dealings with them have been treated with the utmost professionalism.

Sincerely,
Joe T.

Default Wayne and Bill are 2 very good people

Bill *IS* one of my favorite people in the hobby as we both share a love for old music (50's-70's -- in other words, when it was still music) and old radio air checks and knowing about that music.

If you talk to many of the older dealers there is a correlation between them and liking and knowing about the "old-time" rock and roll. A few nationals ago, I remember chatting with a dealer from Colorado (can't remember his name -- but he has an oldies show there) and the next time I talked to Bill at the show we discussed that and he mentioned that he had known the guy for 20+ years and never knew about the shared music love.

Next thing I knew, the 2 of them spent a few hours together planning that guy's radio shows and Bill trying to help him with some records to play

Rich
