Just got home an hour ago from the Chicago SunTimes show. Its the 1st sports card show (other than the 40 table Holiday Inn types) that I have ever been to. I went there with $3500 in my pocket and a simple goal....buy either a Drum, Uzit or Red Hindu (or any combo), and get out.
Well, 10 seconds after I walked in, I almost fell over! Right there in the very 1st dealer case in front of the entrance, sitting in the middle, was an Uzit! I secretly thought to myself, how could I be so lucky? What I failed to realize is that it was Goodwin's auction case, and the card was part of a complete set of T206 backs. They were all there, BL460, RH, Drum, even the Cobb. So I wasnt able to negotiate on that one....on to the next vendor. Although there were a good 150 vendors there, and probably at least 30 who had T206 cards in their cases, I couldnt find any backs rarer than brown Hindu. Finally I stumbled onto 707's table and my eyes were immediately drawn to that sweet, soft purple color! 2850 was on a little sticker on the slab, which was a bit more than I wanted to spend on a Drum specimen. I talked to the dealer, Jim was his name, and we agreed to a cash price of 2500 if I wanted the card. At this point in time, I had seen far less than 1/3rd of the show, and my palms began to sweat. Jim told me there were none of what I was looking for except in the Goodwin auction. I told him I still wanted to look around before blowing my whole budget. Told him i'd be back if nothing caught my eye. About an hour later (maybe even less) I found myself back in front of his table. I was an under bidder on the recent ebay Drum that sold for 2326 as my bid was 2200. I thought to myself, if I was willing to pay 2200 on a GAI 2, why not 2500 on a PSA 2? I also knew I woulda kicked myself all the way home had I not bought it....so I laid out 25 crisp $100 bills and havent stopped smiling since! There were exactly 2 Drum cards at the show.....the one I nabbed and the one in the Goodwin collection. No other Uzits, RHs, or Lenox cards to be had either. I finally got my Drum! ![]() ![]() |

That's a nice story. It always feels great to cross off a rare card from your want list. I imagine it feels even sweeter for you after losing out on the Drum on eBay.

Nice pick-up, I didn't realize a Drum PSA 2 was a $2800 card these days, but it does look really nice for the grade.

Frank, if his signature bothers you that much, then block him.. its that simple!

Wow! Nice pick-up!
![]() I've been to that show a number of times and there haven't been any scarce backs like that when I've been there! I think your timing was just right. If I were in the same situation, I would have paid the additional $300 for the PSA 2 Kroh in a heartbeat. You won't regret it. Plus, if you ever decide to sell it, the Cubbie is going to be more far more desirable than the minor leaguer. The Cubs cards are generally pretty popular with collectors (with the exception of Tony quinnsryche, of course). Congrats! Glad there was a happy ending to your story. |

If given a choice between a Dick Rudolph card (minor league or not) and a Rube Kroh card I'll take the Rudolph any day! That being said, the Kroh looks a lot better than the Rudolph on ebay as that one had a fairly significant crease!

Well, knock yourself out Frank, if you want to complain after every single post Rob makes I won't stop you, but I think you're being overly sensitive here. I don't even get it "Don't miss the boat, be sure to quote"?? Why does that even bother you?

Frank, I don't think you understand what a signature file is. That "Quote/boat" saying that bothers you so much is going to show up in EVERY SINGLE ONE OF ROB'S POSTS, just like the red type below this post looking for a particular Nebraska Indians postcard... He's not typing that out every time he posts, it's automatic. And I do know that you don't like quoting, but I don't understand why. If you are acquainted with other message boards on the internet you will know that it is not unusual and in fact in places like Usenet it is considered rude not to quote. It's especially useful on this board if a few posts have already been added and you want to specifically respond to something that was mentioned above those posts. Frank I think you are a valuable member of this board, but at times I feel you go out of your way to look for a fight and I think you're doing it here.

feel free to post "FUBAR IS AN ASS" it doesnt bother me.... use it as your signature, if it is theraputic for you... dress it up however you see fit!
I dont get why it bothers you, looks pretty harmless of a quote to me, seems a little bit whiny to me.... but to each their own.... you wanna whine about it, go ahead, its your right But my opinion is.. if you dont like it, dont look and dont bitch! You remind me of my mother... she would sit and bitch about a tv show for an hour about how bad, or vulgar or whatever instead of changing the channel... didnt make sense to me then, still doesnt to this day! See i used to work in the oilfield with men who greet you by calling you a c**t and your wife a wh**e, or at least she was last night... no one is gonna hurt my feelings on here!

I don't have the funds to buy that kinda stuff, but thats AWESOME. I love reading about the scarcity of the different backs and stuff. Are the Drums the rarest back overall?
Plus, as was stated earlier, its always great to hear a collector find something they really are looking for. Lets hope for more great personal finds!! |

Jim, nothing more than Rudolph was the superior ballplayer. For a few years in the mid-1910's Rudolph was considered among the better pitchers in the game...

I would invest the $5 for a re-slab to tab it a "Drum" from an unknown back on the holder. Makes you wonder how many unknowns have really scarce backs??

I am not one for drama, as I get enough of that at the house. I just like to buy, sell and watch, but I sure did wanna kick CHI206's teeth down his throat. I was just hoping that he would go as fast as he came, and he did. I was a happy man when he said he wasn't coming back.
Hope all is well, Bob |

That is my question. How did 707 get the card back? Purchase on Net54? Weird... Card was sold last spring for $2500 by 707 and put back on Net54 for sale - then ends up back with 707...

Chicago206 bought the card and a few weeks later auctioned it off on ebay and I guess Levi was the winner.
Chicago206 was around for a couple months and put together a back set of 206s. Well most of a back set not all. Soon as he could not find a couple real tough ones he decided to sell-he put them all on the bst and what didn't sel there he put on ebay-haven't heard from him since. good enough of a recap?
