The stamp shown was sent to me by Bob Groom's grandaughter. She bought it on ebay and is wondering how you can distinguish a real one from, say, a modern copy or xerox. Any info appreciated.

Def looks like a real Helmar stamp to me - somplete with its original glassine envelope.

The Helmar should have a bit of a shiny front. I haven't seen any fakes but there probably are some. That one looks like a real one with sort of a poor scan. regards

Definitely looks good. The paper on the Helmars is very thin. I have been collecting Helmars for a while now and don't think I have ever seen a repro. The fact that it came with a glassine envelope helps.

To add to what Leon said - I agree the scan is poor, which I think might make the stamp look a bit "off." Truth be told, with commons selling for $5-$10 and not huge demand for them, seems like not a good way to make a ton of money!

I have been trying to place a value on a Wagner stamp that was given to me back when I was a kid (early 80's). Whenever I show it to a card collector...I get blank stares...or immediate (what I consider) low ball offers. I have given up trying to find the value on it. I know, I know...I will try to post a pic ASAP. I am just saying that not many people are into stamps...

On the Wagner stamp question, if you describe it in detail it can be IDed by someone here. unless its a modern stamp...
What size, colors, design, real photo or drawing, pose, where the caption is places and what it says, is it perforated, etc. Are you sure its Honus and not one of the other Wagners of the era? You dont need to have a picture to get an answer. There are plenty of different types of stamps and they are all very collectible and sometimes very rare because many were used as intended and never survived. 1909 German stamps all the way up to Topps stamps of the 1960s. |
