Good to hear some stolen baseball cards were recovered and returned to the owner.
http://ww.abc6.com/global/story.asp?s=12807064 I'm just not sure if the owner realizes the cards aren't quite worth $11K. Who wants to break the news about the Babe Ruth card? Maybe the P-F '87 Ruben Sierra must be the money-maker! |

$11K was likely the amount reported on his homeowner's insurance claim.
The owner's probably ticked off that the authorities caught the thief and returned the property. He could have bought some REAL nice cards with $11K...

She should get a good lawyer and get it down to a misdemeanor no way they are worth 11K

Depends on the particular State, some States make theft a felony if it is over $500 in value and it looks like they could be worth $500+ (not much more). Also burglary is a breaking or entering with intent to commit a felony so she could be looking at both theft and burglary. Around here a burglary of an occupied home means mandatory pen time. The gal could be in a world of hurt.

I am very glad they got these people, why cards and not a bank or something else? The local news had a field day with this story

Residential burglary would be difficult for reduction to a misdemenor in most states I would think. Here in California, it means a strike most of the time.

Yup. Owner was probably hoping he never saw those cards again. Most burglers aren't as smart as we think they are. Sometimes it's just a matter of reporting the crime. I just picked up some stuff from the evidence locker from my town police station a couple days ago for a car break-in that happened about 16 months ago. Minor stuff like phone and GPS cords and adaptors and misc. crap out of the glove compartment..............but a violation just the same. We could have gotten the stuff back 16 months ago if we had not pressed charges and just been happy with getting our crap back. Another flaw in the system I guess, that I don't quite understand. If you want to press charges, they keep your stuff as "evidence" and the case get dragged out for over a year..........................or..............we'l l give you your stuff back, but you need to drop the charges. ![]() |

Quoted from the Cape Cod Times article:
==== The cards' owner, whose name was not released by police, identified the collection as his, saying they were family heirlooms. ==== Someone must've hated this guy if they passed down a tattered 1987 Topps card and a Babe Ruth reprint! Estimated values for the real cards: Red Cobb: $500 - $750 Bender: $100 - $150 Wagner: $50 tops T201 Cobb: $100 at best T201 Johnson: $50 at best So my high values got me to $1100, not $11,000. So it was just a case of an extra zero, that's all! |

Apparently the authorities didn't think she was the person who actually entered the residence and stole the cards, that's why it's just theft by receiving and not theft and burglary. No mention in the article about who police thought was the perp who actually entered the residence.
I'm thinking here (pure speculation) that this was an ex-girl friend who lifted the cards or an acquaintance and, if so, probably ends up being a misdemeanor theft, $500 fine and costs, maybe a little community service. |

My guess is the guy had picked up a price guide at some point and thinks every card is worth full guide value +. I would bet he has no clue about cards... otherwise, why would you own a Ruben Sierra.
