Hello everybody! My name is Brad and I have recently started getting interested in vintage cards after reading about the history of my favorite team (Pirates).
I joined Net 54 after reading through the website as a non-member and really like the looks of the community. My budget isn't high but I plan on having fun. I also collect Sean Burnett (Nationals Reliever) and Troy Polamalu (Head & Shoulders Pitchman LOL). Without further ado here are my earliest cards! ![]() My Brother bought me this as my high school graduation gift. It meant alot to me because I caught as well. ![]() Tommy "Wee" Leach ![]() Howie Camnitz ![]() Max Carey (My first HOF) I'm looking forward to eventually adding cards of Honus Wagner, Babe Adams, Fred Clarke, Pie Traynor and the likes to my collection. Someday... |

Welcome Brad.
I do have one question though. Are your cards trimmed to the bone or have they just been scanned that way? |

Welcome to Club FiveFour, Brad. Gets a little weird here sometimes - this place passes as a social life for some of us anyway - but there's lots of great baseball talk. Here's a Pirate catcher for you:

Nice! I was actually in Pittsburgh last year for the Tigers-Pirates series and for Sunday's game they wore the throwbacks from the 1909 series. It was a great experience and the Pirates won!

Brad,
Thank You and here are some cards you may like to view. They are not done to scale (the Maranville is much smaller): Last edited by Brian Van Horn; 06-14-2010 at 08:26 AM. |

Hi Brad,
Welcome! I am relatively new here myself. This is an unbelievably mature and sophisticated forum, most of the time ![]() I have a quickie suggestion for you concerning scanning. When you scan cards that have a white border put a dark colored (black) piece of paper behind the cards and the scanner will crop/autocrop the cards to include all of the white border. Good luck building your vintage Pirates collection! |

Good luck Brad. Remember that collecting is a marathon, not a sprint. BTW, if you were a catcher you might appreciate this book about the origins of the position:

A couple of useful on-line references that enabled me to research this post are the Old Cardboard magazine website (www.oldcardboard.com) which has pretty thorough player checklists for a lot of vintage issues as well as some card galleries, and Baseball Reference dot com (www.baseball-reference.com) which has encyclopedic detail of major and minor league careers for virtually anybody who ever was paid to play baseball. If you haven't yet consulted either site then check them out. There are dozens of other good baseball websites but these two, for me at least, are indispensable. ![]()

While I wouldn't call myself a Pirates fan necessarily, there are some very cool Pirates sets that I'd collect in an instant if I had the money [too many Wagner cards!]. Off the top of my head, E104-2, E90-2 & D322.
Welcome to the board Brad. Regards, Richard. NB. No Pirates thread would be complete with a Voskamp... ![]() ![]() |

I love all this stuff! Reading the early history of the Pirates is one of the few things that has helped me through a relatively abysmal state of things in Pittsburgh of late.
