Should this card be in an SGC 40 holder and, better still, why is there so much room between the black insert and the card? |

Is that frosting along the upper left edge of the case? Could the case have been cracked open and a lesser card inserted?
I don't own any graded cards but have seen plenty on this board and on eBay. To me, THAT listing looks fishy and I don't see how it got out of SGC with so much open space around the card. David |

If that is, in fact, the card that "earned" the original grade, the grade is exceedingly generous.

Kevin,
That's a pretty good observation. I saw the card and thought it was a generous grade but you're right, that's a lot of space between the card and the black insert. Usually SGC is pretty good about keeping a snug fit between the card and insert.

Not only does it look small, but it has paper loss and glue staining on the front. A 20 would be generous (despite a decent photo).

I think the holder has been tampered with. SGC keeps the card tight in the holder. This one is floating around. Something stinks.

Nah! This will be on page 3 by end of Sunday. If this were about a PSA card we would be at post 189 already.

Wouldnt you need 2 of the cards to do this? Wonder how nice his collection is? Besides the 2 raw T206's he has up right now (same background in pics), all the other stuff (hundreds of items) he has sold recently are raw '70's Topps. |

It's hard to tell from the photo, but that little spot of frosting wouldn't necesarily mean the case has been cracked open.I've submitted cards to SGC and had the slabs come back with around 6 to 7 frosted spots all around the edges of the slab.
As far as this card goes,I'll leave that one to the OJ experts-one thing is certain,it does fit very strange in the holder, with all that space......... ![]() Last edited by teetwoohsix; 03-21-2010 at 01:29 AM. |

sgc slabs are very easy to tell once it's cracked and resealed. other than that i defer all matter n172s to jay (his freakin' id is oldjudge for god's sake). if he thinks it's not a 40, then it's not a 40...if he feels card is trimmed or short, then it's trimmed or short.

It's scary that this thing has received a number of legitimate bids. That's certainly a case of folks buying the grade/holder instead of the card.

Erich - so long as the card is authentic (and I haven't seen anyone suggest it wasn't) $350 for a N172 Kelly, even if trimmed or overgraded is not overpaying.

That card may not be trimmed. It is a bit over-graded if that is paper removal on front (together with the stain). The card is slightly taller than a typical 1889 (which are already the tallest OJs with a normal cut) and a bit narrower, not uncommon. At the time the card was graded, I suspect SGC didn't have many inserts that would fit an extra tall 1889 with that width. I have some graded 1889 cards that float left to right as this one does.
I would like to see the card in person but good chance it isn't trimmed, just stained with some paper removal => SGC10-20.

Delayed bump . . .
As I previously stated, SGC seems to have occasional insert issues with taller 1889 OJs such as this Kelly. The 1887 Brooklyn cards have the same issue (taller than normal OJs). I personally believe the Kelly may have an original cut but the stain on front and possible paper loss should relegate it to a lower grade. Would like to see the card in person. The winning bid seems about right ($1,246.99) but it is strange that the under bidder managed to place 5 bids in the final 7 seconds. How do you do that? I would think a snipe service would just place a single bid with a second or two left. The under bidder must have had some quick fingers and fast internet service or multiple window ready to go. http://cgi.ebay.com/1887-N172-OLD-JU...item2eabdc550c Here are some other SGC examples of taller 1889 cards with ill fitting inserts. These were purchased raw and I had them graded (no funny business).
