I am in touch with a person who has a quantity of photos for sale.
I have received scans of some of them, some appear to be type 1, but others don't have the clarity of type 1 photos. Some have pencil writing on the back describing the scene in the photo, some have a stamp on the back reading ""this telephoto was transmitted over wires of the Bell System". Here are copies of this stamp and one of the photos. Any thoughts or ideas on these pics would be appreciated. The photos include sports and non sports. The photos measure 5x7.

The one you pictured is a wirephoto. Telephoto and wirephoto are synonymous, and 5x7 is a common size for wirephotos. The vast majority of wirephotos are vintage to the date of the image subject (they're current event photos) but don't have first generation images (as you noticed). Wirephotos are collected and have financial value. They were the photos 'wired' by news services (AP, UP, etc) to newspapers and magazines. A newspaper's old archives will contain both originals and wirephotos. So it makes sense someone offering you a news photo collection that has originals and wirephotos mixed together.

I'm pretty sure that photo is taken in St. Louis, probably during the '26 or '28 Series. I recall seeing a bunch of overhead shots of Ruth, Gehrig and the like in pretty much the same format, so I figure this one's from the same family...
