Have any of you seen these before? I can't find them in the Standard Catalog. Based on the players, it looks like they are from 1948-50. Also, notice that there are two different backs. Only the Gordon has the back shown at the bottom. Could they be from two different years?

Hey Paul
I haven't seen those before, that I remember. I do have a question though. Do they feel like photo stock or regular cardboard stock? The reason I ask is that I have seen some photo's, given out at parks as premiums, be made into a postcard with a postcard "stamp" on the back. If that were the case then they would be a generic postcard, I guess.

Leon,
They're definitely postcard stock of the type you'd find with most "real photo postcards". I know the Indians issued some real photo postcards over the years. But I've never seen any with the block lettering on the front, and I've never seen a Greenberg. Does Dan Even monitor this board? He might be the right guy to ask. By the way, for what it's worth, the cards all have a very glossy surface. Last edited by paul; 09-22-2009 at 12:42 AM. |

We have about 16 Dans on this board so not sure which one you are speaking of? Dan Mckee is participating on the pre-war side right now....Interesting that they are on cardboard stock but have a glossy front.

The 'Kodak' stamp box was introduced in 1950, while the 'EKC' stamp box was from 1940-50. So they could be from different years. They are real photo postcards as Kodak/EKC (Eastman Kodak Co) only made products, including postcard stock, for photographs.

Leon, the "E" in "Even" was intentionally capitalized. There's a postcard specialist named "Dan Even".

There are lots of these sorts of uncatalogued Indians PCs around. I have an Al Rosen, autographed and addressed to a fan in his own handwriting, with a 1953 postal cancellation on it. Perhaps they were promos made up for fan responses?

Movie stars, politicians and athletes often had photos made up for them for fan autograph requests or just to send to fans. This often included postcards and smaller photos. With movie star versions, they're often called 'fan photos.'

But you are correct; in that he would be a great source to answer this question as would Bob Thing in Maine.

Hi Paul,
These postcards aren't uncatalogued but just one of the few variations of the runs of postcards in the Indians issued beginning in 1948. It's funny that you mention Dan Even, because as I write this I'm referring to a checklist for the Type II (1948-49) Indians postcards he sent me a few years back. This excerpt should help: "Same basic pose often came with a cropping different or with different version of a printed name. Cards with white printed name (WN), black printed name (BN) and no printed name (NPN). Sometimes the printed name was repositioned on the card. Only listed are the basic poses, there were many re-croppings of the same pose." For what it's worth, I've always placed a premium on PCs with this type of printed name because in my experience some of the poses are toughter to find. I don't have proof that some of them are tougher, it's just been my impression. Here are a handful of other examples. Note the different croppings on the Fellers. In one, the man along the left side can clearly be seen; in the other, all you see is his left shoulder. Last edited by Rob D.; 09-24-2009 at 02:44 PM. |
