The 1st part of this quiz is easy.....
The tough part of this quiz is....is this a unique trio ? Or, can you name 3 others that have achieved this fame ? ? TED Z |

I think the easy one is Williams, Yaz and Rice in left for the Bosox.

While I'm trying to think of others, I'll try Earl Combs, Joe DiMaggio, and Mickey Mantle. I know Chapman played more games than Combs in center in 1935, and maybe 1934, but Combs was still in center some of the time....

I probably don't understand the question.
All three of these left fielders were inducted in 1945 Clarke, Delehanty and O'Rourke P.S. Rice is not in the Hall (yet) Last edited by Jacklitsch; 07-18-2009 at 09:18 AM. |

George Kelly was at 2nd for the New York Giants for 108 games in 1925.
In 1926 the Giants had Frankie Frisch at 2nd in 127 games. And Rogers Hornsby was at 2nd for the Giants for 155 games in 1927. This surprises me... not Frisch and Hornsby, but Kelly. I'd always thought of him as a big first baseman. I'm surprised he was at second base. |

Is Williams, Yaz and Rice supposed to be the answer?
If so Rice is not in the Hall, at least not until induction next week. |

Ted can you clarify the question? I don't understand why Williams Yaz Rice is not correct.

SAYHEY24 gave the correct answer....which, will be true when Rice is officially inducted next week.
The real question is....have any other trio of ballplayers achieved this exact fete of directly succeeding each other on a given position that are in the HOF ? TED Z |

Let me try another grouping
Brooklyn's shortstops.... Leo Durocher, 1939, 113 games at short Pee Wee Reese, 1940 to 1942 Arky Vaughan, 1943, 99 games at short I think there are more trio's than we suspect... |

Technically, Frank you are correct....when Reese served in WWII, Vaughn replaced him at SS for the Dodgers.
This succession is valid, but not quite the same as rookies succeeding veteran players. Great research, guy. TED Z |

Since Ted's trivia is answered (unless someone finds another trio), let me throw out a pair:
1) Who is the only player to have identical batting average, home run, and R.B.I. totals in two consecutive seasons? 2) Who is the only player to hit exactly 40 home runs for four consecutive seasons? |

Hang on now....
I think I had 2 right answers up there that antedate Williams, Yaz, & Rice, in fact my two groups did it before either Yaz or Rice were born. 1- Kelly, Frisch, and Horsnby 2- Durocher, Reese, and Vaughan And I think there are more. Now, on to Barry's 1st question... Last edited by FrankWakefield; 07-18-2009 at 10:35 AM. |

I'm a fan of the Cardinals.
But there are holes in the Medwick - Musial - Brock claim for left field. Musial ONLY played at first base for the 1957 and 1958 seasons. Wally Moon spent a lot of time in Left in 1957, and Del Ennis in 1958. Musial was only in 12 games for the 1941 season. Ernie Koy was in left for 91 games in 1940, Medwick was out there for 37 games. In 1932 the Cardinals used 10 different players in left field. Ernie Orsatti played out there for 40 games, more than anyone else. Orsatti played 55 games in center. Joe Medwick was in 26 games for the Cardinals that year, 7 in left and 19 in center. Can't hardly claim a streak from Hafey to Medwick with that gap. I still think there are more... |
