The catalogues are wrong. In 1936, National Chicle reprinted 12 of the lower number cards (including #22) with a blue back. These 12 cards also exhibit some small changes (not all, but some) on the front and usually with 1935 stats on the back.

Dad and I have been working for about a year to correct the catalog checklist on the diamond stars. It is way off right now but hopefully by the 2005 edition, we will be finished.

Just checked the 2003 SCD that the seller quoted. The SCD catalogue has it correct, it is the seller that has it wrong. Notwithstanding the 1934 copyright date, note the 1935 stats on the reverse, which I alluded to in my earlier post. The card up for auction is a normal 1936 issue (blue back) which is catalogued, even in the 2003 edition, of which the seller erroneously quotes.

Dan,

Are you saying there are more than 168 total cards in this set? Say it ain't so! I'm down to needing only 16 more in order to have the set with all variations (one more High # common for the basic set).

If there are variations that are not listed in the current editions of the Standard Catalog, can you please let us know what you know of thus far?

Thanks,

Brett

We've had a lot of input from readers on the subject of Diamond Stars following our Standard Catalog Update column in the 10/10 SCD, about the existence of a 1935 Lew Fonseca. The Standard Catalog recognizes 170 cards in a 1934-36 DS "master" set, and many advanced collectors accept that number. A follow-up column has been written and should appear in the next issue or two of SCD. We're currently on a hot-button topic of cards which have been cataloged for years but may not actually exist. It's interesting stuff.

Bob, are you implying that some of the 170 cards don't exist, as i've seen each of the 170 cards, tho, i don't have all of them, yet.
For those who are interested, the 1935 Fonseca is difficult to tell apart from the 1934 Fonseca, as both cards contain his 1933 stats as he sat at the 1934 season due to an injury. However, there are minor lettering differences between the two cards.

The 170 DS cards in the SCBC do exist and comprise the master set. You don't need to get a magnifying glass out to compare type on the 1934/35 Fonsecas; one (1934) says he is 34 years old, the other (1935) lists his age as 35; there are differences in the first line of the bio, as well. Follow-up column is set to run in the 12/05 SCD.
