Default Yes, The Game Is Changing

Baseball has always been about numbers, right?

This topic has been discussed in other threads, so this is merely a statistical example to prove it.

The 2021 Baltimore Orioles used 65 different players during the season. There is probably no one, except Bocabirdman, who could name 50 of them.

They won fewer games than they the number of players they used, only 48.

They used 42 different pitchers during the season.

So each pitcher had an average of 1.142857 wins.

They did not have any 10 game winners on the pitching staff.

They did not have any 9 game winners.

They did not have any 8 game winners.

They did not have any 7 game winners,

but they did have two 6 game winners, that's one a month. Anyone want to guess who they were?

To be fair they did have 7 pitchers who lost 6 or more games. Can you name three?

How many teams in a full season have not had at least one pitcher who won seven or more games?

Even the 40 win New York Mets in 1962 had three pitchers who won at least 8 games and did have 1 ten game winner, Roger Craig.

This is not intended to shame Baltimore in any way, but if you can't pitch 5 innings and have 41 other arms waiting in the wings, the results are not that surprising. Remember when they used a golf cart for relief pitchers to speed up the game. Now they should use a bus.

Many people who study the modern game have posited the following:

Wins are an overrated, meaningless statistic for starting pitchers

The 2021 Orioles took this philosophy one step further.

John Means is a good pitcher. The rest of the team ... :-(
