May Pickups
Not anything expensive, but jazzed to have one in my collection. I watched him pitch for the Braves in the 70's. He was a crazy dude. "The Mad Hungarian", Al Hrabosky.

Interestingly, he was powerless without the infamous 'stache!
Do you remember when he shaved it off? |

Oh, I used to LOVE watching that guy!!!! I totally forgot about him until you posted that! Fantastic pickup!!!
Somewhere I think I still have all of my 1982 Fleer "All" Hrabosky error cards! Here is my signature pickup for the month. An obscure player from Maine, George "Topsy" Magoon. Played in the late 1800's for a while. Not exactly a superstar, but a tough find for my Maine collection. Last edited by JoeDfan; 05-20-2019 at 10:09 AM. |

They called the mustache and beard his "psychc". They made him shave when he was with the Cardinals and his performance became dismal. They let him grow it back and he was back on his game. He said it intimidated the batters.

The umpire once called a strike when there was no one in the batters box. Another when two men were in in the box (you have to see the you tube to believe it). Refused to take balls thrown to him by the umpire (just let them roll by him). I loved watching him walk of the mound, start punching his glove, and getting a crazy man look.

Frank "Big Jeff" Pfeffer vintage signed GPC
On May 8th, 1907 Francis Xavier "Big Jeff" Pfeffer no-hit the Reds in Boston.
Big Jeff Pfeffer had a relatively short and somewhat undistinguished career in the ML aside from the no-hitter. His autograph is pretty obscure and I'm happy to have added this nicely signed GPC to my collection of vintage no-hit pitcher sigs. Pfeffer had an earlier death date, passing in 1954. It was in a PSA slab when I bought it, but I happily played "Free Willie" today. Last edited by Scott Garner; 05-23-2019 at 01:17 PM. |
