Dave Mcnally hit a grand slam in a World Series. I would consider this part of pitching but Tippy Martinez picked off three baters in one inning.

I will tell you what I remember about the day Cloninger hit the two grand slams...I was away at sleepaway camp and it was around 100 degrees that day. How I make those connections I don't know, but Cloninger's game will never be equalled.

The player who ran for President of the US in 1988 is Bill "spaceman" Lee. He ran on Canada's Rhinoceros Party and his slogan was "no guns, no butter, both can kill".

Bill Lee was one of the most colorful players ever to play the game. He named Don Zimmer (then manager of the Red Sox), the "designated gerbil". Lee, while jogging to Fenway Park one day was heard to say, "my use of marijuana makes me immune to bus fumes". Lee also said the following:

"You have two hemispheres in your brain - a left and a right side. The left side controls the right side of your body and right controls the left half. It's a fact. Therefore, left-handers are the only people in their right minds."

Truly I can't make this stuff up!

Anybody remember Stu Miller getting "blown off the mound" in Candlestick? In the first '61 All-Star game, I believe. Not a record, unless somebody measured how far he was snorted. Actually, of course, he was just called for a balk when the wind shoved him around a bit, and while giving up the go-ahead run, ended up winning the game on singles by three guys named Mays, Aaron and Clemente. Not bad support!
