Each of us has one "showcase" item in our collection.

The item that has both significant financial, and in many
cases ,sentimental value.

However, as young Billy Mastro told us some 30 years, remember
its just a piece of "old cardboard."

Our question is what is that item and what would it take (in trade or
cash) to motivate you to let it go.

Sort of our own answer to the Four Base Hits that someone we all know
and respect sold less than a year ago.


Our item is our uncut sheet of 1912 Boston Garters.
It can be yours if the price is right.

Which in our case is $250,000 or the Anson-Ewing Beer Sign and the Goodwin Champions Sign

Okay Bruce, but I've got a different value system from Mr Mastro -in regards to my one showcase item anyway. My 1968 Opeechee Bobby Orr has immense sentimental value (only item left from my childhood collection)and has some cash value, but will never sell while I still breathe. He was my idol. However, all the other stuff in my armpit collection could be had cheaply if times became too tough.

Steve, what if you were offered $100,000,000 for the Bobby Orr.
In other words, there has to be some amount of money that would
allow you to sell it (which is what Bruce's thread is all about).

Everything I own (my memorabilia, car, house, etc.) is for sale (except my wife and kids).
I may not have anything for sale right now, but that would change quickly for the right price.

Like Steve, my item is also hockey related.

Mark Messier was my favorite athlete growing up. Bought his 80-81 OPC RC when I was 8 years old. It was the pride of my collection for years. It's in EX condition and I'd sell it for $700.

It's nothing more than a coincidence that $700 is the exact amount I paid for a Gem Mint Messier RC earlier this year.

Interesting, we're the same age (and I started following the Red Sox in 1967). I was a huge Yaz and Tony C fan.
I sold my computer software company during the internet bubble and also need nothing.

However, with the right amount of money you could help a lot of people (or more people). There are so many
ways (or more ways) to help family, friends, neighbors, the homeless, the needy, etc. with that kind of money.

I'm a little skeptical, but I guess I'll believe you.

Wives come and go, kids are always yours. Had I known I'd be divorced after 9 years of marriage, I would of traded my x-wife for an '82 Donruss San Diego Chicken, any grade.

As for my whole collection of 8 cards, I suppose I'd trade/sell any of them for at least 10% above what I paid.

I have wondered about this myself.

I don't have any super high card items, but I do have any high dollar Star Wars items, however I don't think this can really be answered unless you were honestly presented with the chance and a true real offer.

As for cards I have a beat to hell 1915 CJ Joe Jackson, maybe worth 2K, but it was bought for me by my grandmother after each of my parents refused. I honestly think I will take this to my grave and I really wouldn't sell it for any amount of money it has to much history and sentimental value to me.

I have a few toy items worth around 25K that are one of a kind items and are the cornerstone pieces in my collection. I think there would be a point I would have to sell it, maybe $500,000. As said I could do a lot more with that money then it would be worth to keep it. Then again I do ever expect to get an offer at even 100,000 so I don't think I will need to make that decision.

If all went to hell, there are a lot of things I could and would sell before these key items.

I would say that generally, it would take either life-altering money or something I wanted more to pry my favorite items out of my hands. What we are 'haggling' over is the degree of disparity I would need to justify the deal. Let's take my E211 Ray Miller as an example. No one else has one; so far as I know, I have the sole surviving specimen of the card, and there is the family thing to consider. If you offered me $5,000 for it I would keep the card. If you offered me $5 million for it I'd not only take it, I'd hand deliver it to you in gift wrapping. The price at which I'd really part with it is somewhere in between. I can say that I've traded off a couple of my "untouchable" items in the past and have been sorry every time, even though I have objectively gotten the "better" of the deal, so before I do another one, I would really have to be at such a huge advantage that there would be no seller's remorse possible later.

I guess my favorite cards would be the three Pinkerton postcards that I picked up at an estate auction in the first few months that I was collecting cards. They are Tinker, Jennings and Rucker, graded SGC 10, 10 and 20, respectively. However, they are the only "find" that I ever made which brought new cards into the hobby.

I guess I would let them go for around $1,500.00, but I don't know where or when I could replace them. The other thing is that I am going for a complete set of Pinkertons and selling them would defeat the purpose of collecting them all.

LOL - Jeff, If that offer were doctrinally accurate, I would probably take it - presuming you could follow through - but of course that would make it doctrinally inaccurate.

I think a lot of people have items that they say they wouldn't sell for anything knowing full well that offer would never come because the actual value is low. I always said my first t206 card, a GOOD condition Roger Bresnahan portrait I've now had for longer than I haven't had it, is a card that couldn't be bought. Realistically no one in their right mind,even an extremely rich person would offer enough to make me change my mind but I wouldn't turn down an amount of money that could help everyone in my family. So basically the card won't be going anywhere but technically it could be bought by a crazy rich person who just wants to prove that everyone has a price.

I have a lot of cards that fall into that category and some of them have very low values,like who would really want my first Carlton Fisk rookie in vg condition? You could offer 1000x its value(for some unknown reason) and you're not getting it,but why would you when you could have a 1000 of them for that price!

I don’t have nearly the caliber of collections of many on this board but of my items the one that I would have the most difficulty parting with without a great offer is my set of six Ty Cobb original glass negatives where he is receiving golf lessons. The fact that arguably the greatest hitter of all time in baseball would need pointers on how to hit a golf ball shows the humility golf can bring upon us all.

What the heck...I'll play along. I don't have a specific card, but I do have about 80% of the T222 Fatima set and in pretty nice shape all in SGC holders. Selling it would be tough, and it would have to be at least $15,000. Those HOFers and SPs can be costly!
