I'm curious as to how SGC graded the above cards. Cabinets with chunks of corners missing still garnered a 40. Is it the picture itself that is graded and the surrounding part not considered?

I was curious about that 40 as well - I will say that the corner doesnt look so bad that I can't be persuaded - just think a 30 would have been more appropriate. I thought the cobb was accurately graded.

It seems to me that all of the grading company's give some leniency to some sets that are known to be condition sensitive. For example, I think psa takes it real easy on T3s. Mayos seem to be given a lot of leeway as well.

Josh, agreed. Just interesting that they gave the Wagner an "A" and cabinets with corners missing could receive a 40. Not that the grade even matters with these cards; just curious as to SGC's grading criteria.

Jeff -

The Wagner received an Auth grade because the top two corners of the mount had become detached and then reattached with tape on the back.

Regarding the grading of oversized cards in general, it is my understanding that a large card is graded as if it is a blown up version of a small card, meaning that if the Matty were shrunk down to, say a t-sized card, the allowable corner rounding/wear would be percentage-wise the same. The corner looks so bad because the card is huge. Same thing with T3's, etc.

That being said, I understand why the Matty is in a 3 holder, but think that it would not look out of place in a 2 holder. Not that it really matters, because no one will miss seeing that corner. Maybe except for me because I wish it was still there

I think Richard hit the nail on the head. SGC is considering the corners on the 40 card to be rounded as opposed to a piece missing. I can see where they are coming from and sometimes the overall eye appeal must be highly considered in the grading system. As stated previously, these cards are so rare that one grade higher or lower should not make much of a difference in price or desirability as I would guess most of these are 1/1's or 1/2's in the pop report.

I gotta agree with some of the above posters that a 40 on the Matty (and the Rucker) was extremely generous, and actually surprises me very much coming from SGC. On a really good day the Matty (or Rucker)is a 30 and is probably a 20. That is just my opinion, but it seems strange that a chunk missing gets a 40 but someone neatly writes their name on back and the card gets killed. I'll admit I'm not a grading fanatic, but the Matty surprises me to say the least. Looking at the Mordecai Brown above, that is what I thought a 40 was (maybe even a 50).

The Wagner is presumably graded AUTH for some tape on the back. Big deal. I wonder how many JK&A Wagners there are compared to T206 Wagners. Probably fewer.

To count all of the T206 Wagners, you would need all of my fingers, and toes, and the fingers and toes of everyone in my whole family.

I am thinking that I would just need the fingers on one hand to count all of the JKA Wagners out there.

As for what I believe SGC and PSA thoughts are on corner wear deserving of a 3 for an oversized card, here is a side by side comparison of the Matty next to a T206 Joss, also in a SGC 40 holder:

As I said earlier, I think the Matty would be fine in a 30 holder. I can understand the 40 holder. For this card, in particular, I don't think it really matters.

Gentlemen, I am grateful for your posts.

I think the JK&As are beautiful cards, truly great. It matters not if some slab company put a 40, 30 20, or an A on it. I'd love to own any one of the bunch, even the worst of the bunch.

There are many baseball cards that are less plentiful than a Wagner T206. Each of you have such a card with your JK&A. I've about settled on the notion that there are 80 to 100 Wagner T206s out there. No way there are that many of any of the JK&As.

Thanks for posting them. And any one with one yet shown please dig it out and scan it. I can't recall ever seeing so many images of them at one time. A wonderful thread!

This is my first time posting over here on the card side (daily lurker tho). Here is Nixey Callahan. It is very nice to see the other offered examples. There was a grouping of these cabinets offered in the early to mid '90's by Mastro or Lelands. I can find the catalog if anyone is interested. I will proceed to the esoteric cabinets post. It's also a good one!
