The end of my T206 journey

Very nice gesture!

I bought my first T206 which was Schlei Batting in 1999 and have collected the set fairly steadily until today. Have had all of the backs except for the brown variations, cobb, and the old mill print freaks.

Use to buy small groups of cards from Mark Macrae at the Tacoma Dome shows when they were still going, but mostly collected one by one using Mark Peavy's player checklist.

Thanks to you board members (too many to name) for making it a fun set to collect and for all the trading and knowledge.

Rob- Very, very cool. I gave up at 50 cards, but the itch to start again is there every time I open ebay. I have to ask, does your set include the big 4 (and can we see some scans)?

Robert: We had a bit of a collectors' kinship going last year when we were both trying to finish up D304, and I appreciated the relaxed and rational approach you brought to the process. My set is minus the last six cards.

I don't think I found that many cards to be extra tough. Just some that were more expensive. I try to collect soiid vg for the commons and at least good for the hall of famers. Upgrading is a huge part of the process for me and is neverending I suppose.

David,

I still owe you one (or two) for helping me with the D304s. I consider that one my "everest!"

John,

When I started collecting T206, I only collected hall of fame players and they were quite a bit cheaper back then. Not sure how much I've put into it. Maybe someone else could estimate how much it would cost to begin now? I will say that the commons can be had in pretty decent shape for $15-$20 most times.

T206 is a funny set for me because I have traded away so many rare back combinations and hofers for cards from other sets along the way that it became kind of a back-burner set.

Not very exciting but I keep all the raw T206s and T207s in two shoeboxes.

Would like to switch over to an album one day soon. I've started to keep other raw cards like obaks and zeenuts and non-sports in an album.

I used to organize them by back, but now they're alphabetical so that I could make sure I wasn't missing one or two.

Just a suggestion.....assuming you have about 520 cards in your T206 set, and you intend to maintain
them ungraded....then get a box of 15-pocket UTRA-PRO plastic sheets. There is nothing neater than
flipping thru 35 pages of T206's in your Album.

I have mine organized in order of Series, and like you, I started with the checklist in Mark Peavy's book.
And, I refined the organization by Series when Scot Reader's book became available.

I buy most of my T206's graded and then crack them out. However, I do have a few questions for you.

1. Can you get your T206 set into one album?

2. Does it matter if you store the albums lying down, standing up? The reason I ask is if the weight of the cards and/or the binder would affect the cards?

My albums lie down and I provide regular 8 1/2 x 11 sheets of paper for separating between every
plastic page. I don't like to have the plastic page touching each other.

Back in the 1980's, I used to store my albums upright; as, I found that the old (PVC type) plastic
would affect certain BB cards (especially 1953 Bowman's).

But, the problem with the albums placed upright was that the pages would sag; and, the lower
right corners of the plastic pages curl up. So, I wouldn't place a BB card in that pocket, instead
I would insert a stiff cardboard spacer.

I have 40 plastic pages in my T206 Piedmont album and with the right size binder it is sufficient.

I once got to where you are. It was a long rewarding journey. But I have two questions for you--

1. When you say you are six shy, do you mean Wagner, Doyle, Plank, Magie, Demmitt and O'Hara?

2. Would you trade most of your set to get the Plank, Magie, Demmitt and O'Hara cards?

Just curious - why do you use the paper between plastic sheets (or better stated, why do you not like the pastic to touch)? Do they tend to stick together over time or is there another reason? Thanks.

I haven't bought any in quite awhile, but one great investment you can make if you have card albums is a binder holder (I'm sure there's a better term--slipcover?). Dolton Hobby out of Illinois used to have them. You can store the 3" binders in them..and thus your card albums can be displayed upright as they should be on a bookcase shelf. The sagging is minimal, but it will happen a bit with larger sets.

I have placed paper separators between plastic sheets since Bob Lemke wrote an article in the BaseBall Cards magazine (1981) on
the dangers of long-term storage of BB cards in PVC type plastic pages. Many scoffed at him back then....but, I saw the affects of
this problem a few years later. Several cards (5) in my 1953 Bowman color set were starting to exhibit the affects of this plastic in-
teracting with the pictures on the fronts of these cards. Fortunately, it wasn't any of the star cards. This was around 1986, and I
immediately removed all my Sports cards from their plastic sheets.

That was then......now we have mylar-quality plastic to arrange our cards in. For my better sets, I use high quality mylar pages to
store my sports cards in. But, I still insert paper separators between the plastic sheets.....I guess I'm just a creature of habit.

I have a strong feeling your set was a lot higher grade than mine. In other words, it would difficult for me to trade my set for a Plank.
That being said, I'm very interested in Plank's T206. The other's I have no interest in.

Plank obviously is a true rarity of a wonderful player and is in my opinion the best looking card in the set!

Magie is a type error. I like this sort of thing and believe it's highly collectible, but would rather spend such a large amount of cash on something else.

Demmitt and O'Hara wouldn't give me the bang for my buck. For many of the scarcer T206 variations (ie Smith, Dahlen, Kleinow, Elberfield) and yes these two, I believe the higher prices are purely based on demand and not on how rare they actually are.

I think they're unbelievably scarce compared to other t206, but not when you consider other tough cards outside of the set.

Just my opinion of course.
