Just don't seem to see that card too often (especially that nice).

I'm not sure who the 1st underbidder was, but from the history, it appears that they have been around awhile, so perhaps they had a similar view.

In any case, agreed-- a strong price in this instance, but not necessarily an escalation of E94 prices, in general.

I was the underbidder.
Given all the e94 talk lately, I had a feeling this was gonna go high...but it looks like I was off by about $7.00.
Bates is the last card I need to complete my set of 1 of each player regardless of color and this was a nice one.
Oh well..I'll be waiting for the next one.

Alan- the next time a Bates comes up on ebay, please drop me an email if you think about it and I'll stay away. I was 3rd high bidder but had a late snipe which didn't get in when the prices soared and thus didn't affect the final price.

Quan- You're right, the only problem is that the prices for E94s is no secret anymore. Geez even the 2s, 3s and 4s are getting high these days Good for ye olde E94 collector who has a boatload but on the flip side it makes it hard to complete the master set. I am only bidding now on E94s that I need to complete it so usually I am not active unless I stumble on to one of those.

I was expecting in the high 500's, that got blown out of the water! Is this particular player a rarity in the set or is its color? I dont know much about this sets particular rarities. Are there colors or certain commons that are tough?

Bates is one of the tougher cards in the set and gold is always a popular color along with violet, the general conception among collectors being that these are the two toughest colors. Still, I was surprised at the final price.

According to the vintagecardprices.com website(which I find very helpful)there was a PSA 3 e94 Bates in gold that sold for $665 back in January, so this is somewhat of an escalation in price.

picking up on Tbob's comments - are the gold and violet's truly more rare or more popular -- I've seen a few numbers on the colors but are there "shoter prints" on particular colors that are known ?? TKS - D

Definitely shorter prints on the orange background e94s which means that anything's possible.

I've definitely experienced more red and green e94s, but not sure if it's due to collectors really going for purple and gold because they're aesthetically pleasing or if they were printed in lesser numbers.

Violet has long been thought to be the scarcest color with gold being a close second and closing ground in the last 6-7 years. I think green (the dark forest green) is an overlooked background color scarcity though. I guess we'll never know for sure. I do know one thing, in going through my tabulated E94s by color and grade, I find the hardest (by far) color to find in nice shape is the olive. I have no clue why that is but while I can find violets and golds in VG, EX and EXMT, olives, when available always seem to be in P or F or GD. I can't explain this...

Possibly, or perhaps the olive background colored ones being the least aesthetically pleasing were trashed more often whereas the bright, "pretty" colors were saved.

As we have long argued, condition really matters.

Ultra high grade examples, especially if they are the only known sample,
extant. command extraordinary prices.

We wonder what the currnet market would pay for our PSA 8 E-94?

We purchased this card for well less than $2000 about 30 months ago and recently
turned down a 350% profit.

Whilst it is sometimes nearly impossible to acqire the best known sample or
even the penultimate example, inevitably the best is always worth waiting for.

We believe it will become increasingly difficult to sell ungraded cards,
especially those with values in excess of $1000...

What do you think?

Some stubborn or clueless people will continue to sell raw cards. I've seen a couple of them on eBay. Have been winning cards from one seller there and getting them graded a full grade higher than the condition he is listing them as. One T206 Hof-er was listed as near mint and it came back PSA-8. I won the card at $600. What do you think the profit margin would be if I sent it in to Mastro or REA?

What do you mean difficult to sell? Why would raw cards worth over a 1000 dollars all of a sudden be difficult to sell? If i see the raw N167 like the one recently listed on ebay with a BIN of $12,500(which was bought immediatly)and i had the cash id have pulled the trigger too. Now could the seller have gotten more for it graded, possibly, perhaps probably. But thats a different arguement.

E94's, as well as other scarce cards, have increased in value in all conditions. In most cases it is just too difficult to find them in high grades.

And for the record, what is the difference between a high grade card and an ultra high one? Have you discovered a new grade that none of us know about, such as PSA 11 or SGC 105?

Barry, your PSA 11 reminds me of Nigel in "This is Spinal Tap". If you remember, when he needed is guitar to be just a little bit louder he would crank his amp up to 11.

I dunno, I just bought 4 E94s, all ungraded, so I know some people are still selling them unslabbed. 2 were vgex, one vg and one fair. I suspect there are a bunch of unslabbed e94s out there which (hopefully) will pop up for auction someday. Remember Lionel Carter's 25 were all unslabbed until they were given to SGC to grade by Mastro...

I think all rare cards in pretty much any grade are increasing in value these days. High grade cards are great, but how do you put together a high grade E94 set? Just getting all of them in 3's and 4's is a major challenge.

I have a PSA 3 Lajoie that when entered into the E103 set registry came up as a 12 - did wonders for my set average. To compound the confusion it was actually an E93.

One of the best buys I ever made was an E94 red Cobb which was incorrectly listed by Leland's as a red E98. There is a world of difference in the prices
