In that case at least 1/4 of MLB players should be suspended. You could pretty much wipe out the NFL and NBA as well- or are we only concerned with the juice and not wife-beating, gun shooting and other questionable conduct?

I guess then, we'll all have to start collecing tennis and soccer cards.

I just assume everyone has used since most have already. Everyone talks about tainted records, etc, but they are all playing on a level playing field with everyone using. So what's the big deal? I could really care less who is, or isn't using as long as the games are fixed like they are in wrestling.

I was tested last weekend! Enroute to winning the 45-49 year 242 pound class AAPF Masters National Powerlifting meet.

Now if they had tested me 20 years ago, all kinds of bells and whistles would have went off.

Most of the Major league players of all sports are not using the old time steroids most would be familiar with. Most of them are using designer pro-hormones that in the strictest since are not anabolic steroids, but nearly identical with the chemical make up slightly altered. These are not what trade hands in the local gyms. I would also venture to say a great deal of them would test positive and not have ever taken anything illegal, you would be surprised at how many over the counter products at GNC, etc. will render a positive read, most due to elevated testosterone levels, these products contain traces of prohormones and other test derivatives.

Also a good deal of the players seeking size and power, would opt for HGH/ growth hormone, undetectable in most tests as it occurs naturally in the body.

Well I've been bodybuilding for several years and there are many compounds that athletes can use that can not currently be tested for. GH, IGF-1, Insulin, PGF, MGF, etc, etc. You guys really think taking steroids out of the game is going to clean it up?! Get real, there are other anabolic compounds, testosterone is just one(which all anabolic steroids are, or derivatives of) out of the many that todays athletes can use.

Scott brings up an interesting point. I shop occasionally at GNC and Vitamin Shoppe (for vitamins) and the stuff they have on the shelves is unbelievable and all apparently unregulated. The loophole allowing companies to essentially escape FDA regulation by labeling their substances "nutritional supplements" and printing a boilerplate disclaimer of all the claims made on the same freaking label should be closed. And another thing -- it really bothers me that people get and apparently accept medical advice from clerks at GNC and similar stores.

A-Rod. He looks like he's got the McGuire thing going. Swing less hard and more to contact and the ball still goes out. I saw him in the post-game press conference last night and his face looked puffy. The Eck on the NESN post game show said it was too easy and that he was flicking the ball out. Is this proof? Do I know? No, but I see signs. I might be wrong because we all know the Yanks would never field a player who would do this.

I don't think there's much doubt that Roger used the juice quite a bit. Just look at his stats from 86 to 92 and compare them with his stats from 93 to 96, then look at his stats from that point on. His physical features change at the same time in the same way as Bonds'.

Truth is you can not tell who has definitively used steroids. Certain steroids are mild and other steroids are altered so the more noticable side effects(androgenic in nature) are eliminated. Infact if you were smart about your steroid use as a professional athlete you would stick to the anabolics that are known to be great for strength gains, but do little to effect your weight. Compounds such as primobolan or oxandrolone are well known to boost strength considerably will having a negligable effect on weight gain. Not to mention whats the point in even speculating, as there are so many other hormones and drugs that can effect athletic performance that science still cant test for?!

I wouldnt doubt anyone in the majors. I know someone personally who used while in the minors and his home run total went from 6 the previous year to 2. He said the extra bulk ruined his swing. He nonchalantly said that at least half his teammates did too.Thats one of the big reasons why it doesnt bother me what these guys do as far as stats,if there was only a handful of players then they have unfair advantages. The big thing as a fan is being smart enough to put the stats into historical perspective.When guys were hitting over .400 in the 1890s it didnt mean they were better than current players. As long as you know your baseball history,nothing that happens in the weight room should bother you

I think the more physical sports get away with murder when it comes to performance enhancers.Football and Hockey where those guys take a pounding and theres physical confrontations,barely register when it comes to positive tests.You could never convince me of the merits of those results

The rule of thumb is that if many players are using drugs that greatly enhance their performance, the only way to be ahead of them is to also use drugs. One would have to be Superman incarnate to naturally beat others who are using performance enhancing drugs.

A Tour de France doping expert was asked which place the top clean athlete will finish. "About fiftieth," he said.

With those Get Rich Quick investment scams, when the person promises returns above a certain rate the government automatically considers it attempted fraud. The government considers it impossible to guarantee a rate so high from trading stocks or real estate or whatever. Thus, a company advertising the rate of return is considered fraudulent. In one case, a seminars company promised a return higher than the company made on its own investments ... Along those lines, if the majority of athletes, especially competing superstars, have had their performance artificially enhanced, it can be judged with great accuracy that the winner has had as well. The performance or 'rate of return' itself is reliable indicator ... For discussion's sake, if is true that the top 49 Tour de France placers used drugs that dramatically increased their speed, endurance, recovery time, etc, it can almost be assured that the winner used similar drugs as well. This is because it would be near physiologically impossible for a human to beat those riders with no artificial aid.

In short, in a sport where performance enhancing drugs is prevelant, highest performance, in particular being #1, can itself be considered strong evidence of drug use. In similar vein, if someone sneaks 20 percent of players aluminum bats, you don't have to inspect the bat to judge if the home run champ used an aluminum or wood bat. You just have to look at the performance. If he hit batted .420 with 120 home runs, there's no need to look at his bat.
