I am visiting family in Albany this weekend, so i just spent the afternoon in Cooperstown...went antique shopping for work in the surrounding towns, then had chili & beer at Doubleday Cafe on Main St, and poked around a little...25 degrees and flurrying...


i have beeen up here a bunch of times, and it NEVER gets old...magical.

It really is a special place --I was there again in September and spent some time doing research in the library. The staff was very helpful and it was a comfortable place to work. Beer and baseball --doesn't get much better than that.

I know it is pleasant being in Cooperstown during the "off-season"......but, nothing beats being there
on Hall of Fame weekend. It is set every year for the very last weekend of July. And, if you arrive up
there by Friday of that weekend you can check-out the Base Ball card Show in the VFW building.

Next to the Philly Show, the Cooperstown show is one of the longest running shows in the country.
And, after the show ends on Saturday evening, there is a pretty neat Auction.

I was just in Cooperstown this past weekend. Not too crowded, I did see on display, the 1897-99 Reccius Cigars Honus Wagner card (ungraded) with a sign next to it stating that it was dedicated by Hal Lewis. Not much new in the way of exhibits since my last visit in the fall of 2006. Always an enjoyable time shopping on Main Street in the baseball memorabilia stores.

I haven't been to Cooperstown in a few years but the last time I went I picked up one of those plaque post cards. I bought the Lou Gehrig post card and mailed it to my brother-in-law. I mailed it from Cooperstown and on the back I wrote:
"If you build it, he will come".

I didn't note who the card was from and never told him I was in Cooperstown or that I sent it. He still has the card and shows it off, swearing he doesn't know who sent it to him.. I will never tell.

Glad you saw it and liked it!!!

I bought it back from the guy who bought it in the Leland's auction (he made a quick profit) so that I could donate it.

The auction allowed me to come up with a fair market value for the donation amount.

Any way to get into the HOF is ok with me. Pretty nice card and thanks for sharing with the public.

A number of years ago, I was there and discovered a mistake, wrote them about it and sure enough, they corrected it by the time I went there again.

Also received a nice letter on HOF letterhead regarding the correction to be made. That's as close as I will get to being noted in Cooperstown.

In case you were wondering, they had a picture of Art Shamsky in a Mets cap and honored him for homering in 4 consecutive at bats and had the bat on display. They also had him playing for the Mets when he hit the homers.

He was actually with the Reds at the time and they made the change and were very gracious about it.

Did they tell you how long it will be on display? Are you at all worried that it may become buried in the archives after awhile? They must receive a ton of donations. Just wondering. It's not a BS way to get your name in the Hall of Fame either!!!!

I went to the show Ted is talking about the last couple of years. Nice cards and knowledgeble vendors. Of course the prices are higher than what you can get on Ebay, but if your looking to fill holes there is excellent selection.

Didn't know about the auction. How does it work Ted? Can you get a good buy?

No, Paul, they did not guarantee any specific amount of display time...

but they did guarantee me that any time I am heading up, I can call ahead of time and get it put out on display.

This is why I am so glad to hear from Phil that it was out on display now...

and I hope that others will continue to let me know if they see it one their visit.



Phil: Was it in Honus' locker with his other stuff???

The auction starts at about 7 PM on Sat. nite. The dealers contribute their "goodies" to it.
Several years ago I won some T206's, including a UZIT back for less than $100.

Yes, I believe it was in the players' locker area. It was definitely not with the rest of the baseball card displays from Topps, Old Judge, etc.

Thanks for the information. I've bought cards at the show the last couple of years, but didn't know about the auction. I will stop by and introduce myself.

My wife and I love Cooperstown. It's our favorite weekend of the year. It should be very crowded this year with Ripken getting inducted. And lots of fun.

Although I am local, I spent an evening at the Otesega Hotel. I am of moderate means and attended a conference with a special rate, but if you are able to afford the hotel, it's excellent - room, service, food, ambiance, and, of course, location. I suppose drawbacks for couples would be a lack of spa services at the hotel and Cooperstown really lacks a variety of dining options and non-baseball related shopping. But then these are truisms for the local motels and hotels in the area villages and towns. I imagine rooms are scarce during the busy season, and the hotel had plenty of rooms last night.

it will set you back a princely sum, and there is no consensus on which issue is actually his rookie card...being as how he has been on a few team photos, postcards, and several regionally issued food cards with limited distribution!
