screw down holders. Any horror stories?

I am no grader. But I have what looks to me might qualify for an 8 or even 9 (Joe Tinker). I bought it from a dealer (for about 500) in the late 80's, in a screw down holder, and it has remained as such ever since. Am I setting myself up for a heartbreak when I open it for grading submission and it possibly disintegrates/sticks, etc.?

About 15 years ago I had a nice (Ex+) condition T201 w/ Walter Johnson. The card was in a screw down holder. I removed 3 of the four screws and loosened the last one. I tried to remove the card and a corner of the card got wedged in the corner of the holder that had the screw loosened. Well, as luck would have it the corner tore off the card. From Ex+ to Gd in nothing flat. I should have known better because the T201 cards are pretty frail and thin to begin with... Ok, that's my bonehead story...

I used to put cards that were in the old screw down holders, in a little sleeve first, before tightening the screws, this pretty much eliminated any chance of later sticking, or particles on one of the two pieces of plastic, from damaging the card. I've heard of "sticking" issues, but have never had it happen to me. if it is an 8 or 9, it should have been in a little sleeve. I'd be extremely careful if it seems stuck. i have damaged a few cards over the years with my fingernails, or thumbnail, trying to pick up a card, or move a card. Good luck.

The crease it has came from a screwdown holder, long before I got it.....Glad I didn't do it myself. I would have been heart broken....regards

in my younger days, and nothing of much consequence, luckily.

My worst storage-related disaster comes with a short story. When I was 13, our (separated, thankfully) garage burned to the ground after a lightning-struck power pole fell on it. At any rate, it also blew the house circuit box and as a precaution given the proximity to the house, we all were told to leave the house...of course, I grabbed my most treasured item - my binder of cards...and one of my best suffered from the trip, because it was at the top of the first page, and it was raining outside...well, when I pulled the card out of the page later...this otherwise gorgeous 1970 Hank Aaron lost the lower right corner of front paper...tradgedy!!!....you can imagine that this card is heck of a lot more important to a 13 year old than an adult...I traded hard to get it...oh well.
