Maybe it is just a coincidence, but it seems like whenever we discuss a topic in depth, or merely just mention a particular card or set, that soon after, they come out of the wood-works and onto eBay...

some recent sightings...

(T206 for example) More Rare Backs than usual, Lots, Southern Leaguers, Lindaman, Titus, Kleinow, Demmitt & O'hara, etc...

i have seen a spike (actually not too many Demmitts & O'hara), in the cards listed above, as of late, timed right after we have had discussions about them.

any thoughts? are any of the sellers here lurking or posting? does this board influence what comes out of your vault and gets listed on eBay?

One thing I can say with certainty is a lot of vintage collectors read this board. How that translates in terms of ebay sales is unclear, but many times when I see people discussing a "hot" card on the board, if I have one, there's a good chance it's heading to ebay (but not always).

It's evident we have something to do with it. Whether or not it's Net54 being AHEAD of the curve or dictating the curve has yet to be seen but...

hoping that will generate enough interest so that I can FIND these cards. I have cash/trade fodder and am willing to carter with anyone who has them.

MVSNYC, I think there's some truth to what you say, more than mere coincidence.


A time or two I've wondered if someone's listed a card on eBay then makes a post. And a time or two I've wondered if someone read a post then dug up the card and listed it... Or they see a card on eBay and then post about it...

Toward that end, let us please discuss O'Hara, St. Louis, in T206, hourly, for a month or so... I don't have him and would like to get an affordable example.

I believe this board does influence some sellers to list certain types on eBay.

One example I specifically remember is when folks were discussing the actual rarity of the T211 Red Sun set and how they never show up for sale, there happened to appear 2 or 3 examples within 2 days on eBay.

This is good though. Why not sell some cards when people all of a sudden want to scoop up an example.

Note: I'm not claiming to be a part of the board's influential body. Although I can try right...I've been hearing lately that it's really great to give your beaters away to people named Andy just for the hell of it. So, I tried it, and it was awesome guys!! you gotta try it.

I agree that it may be coincidence, but here is another example that I believe was not:

Not too long ago there was a discussion about T206 El Principe backs being more scarce than they were given credit for. Within a week, eBay had a bunch of them show up. And, they sold for more than they had previously been selling for.

I do think that I may just be noticing some of them after they have been discussed though. Like the handful of W502's that starting popping up after they were discussed in some detail. I never looked for them before that and probably just starting noticing them after the board discussed them. But I do think the El Principe and Red Sun examples were due to the board's influence.

Just my thoughts.

I think we've noticed that there have been times when our lengthy discussions regarding cards have had some impact on the ebay market particularly.
For me, I have been
most impressed with the POWER of this forum to break new
ground in several areas of research and the power of this forum to
create some great collegiality and long standing friendships.
I am also aware of the perversions of power often seen in the form
of arrogance and even narcissism. Thankfully, these have been short-lived on this board.

Guys, it seems like this forum has changed what I look for and subsequently buy. An example is at the Tri-Star show near the Cow Palace earlier this month, for the first time I saw tables full of Goudeys and a few tables that had T-206's.

Prior to this year I had gone to 3-4 of these Cow Palace shows and I never saw these cards. Probably the reason I never saw these tables in the past was I was looking for more recent vintage cards at the prior shows.

So I'm not surprised that the forum has impact on what's sold on the internet.

Andrew, I absolutely agree that W502s started popping up more frequently on eBay after they were discussed here. I collect the set, and I started the thread here. There may have been one or two copies every couple of weeks, and then suddenly there were 5-10 at a time. And each listing described the back in detail - the backs were what was being discussed on the thread.

Now they're gone again. I'll need to bump that thread, I guess.
