He is depicted on a 1941 St. Louis team issue I believe, and also in 1941 Double Play.

Peter, thanks very much for that information. I have heard of the 1941 Double play cards. I think they were issued by Gum Inc. the same company that issued the playball sets.

Sorry, to correct you.......

The 1941 Double Play cards were issued by Gum Products of Cambridge, Mass.

The Play Balls were issued by Gum Inc. of Philadelphia, PA.....the actual Bubble Gum
with these cards was from the Bowman Gum Co.

Again, please accept this correction in a positive manner, the info in the link you posted is incorrect.
But, if you do not accept my word on this, then.....

Simply look up this set in the Beckett or SCD guides and you will find that the Double Play set is not
connected to the old Bowman Gum Co. that produced the 1939-41 Play Ball sets (GUM Inc), and the
1948-55 Bowman sets.

that is an awesome card. I thought since it was a team issue it was the entire team. Very nice card. How many cards in that set? Were all of the 1941 Cards issued including Musial?

The '41 Cardinals team issue set includes basically the whole team, but no Musial. He didn't join the team until September. But it does include one of the few cards of Johnny Mize as a Cardinal. It also includes a card of Branch Rickey as president (or v.p. or something like that) of the team.

30 cards total in the Cards team issue, and another 30 in the Browns team issue. Along with the Reds Harry Hartman set (34 cards) these are 3 really cool team issues. As Paul stated Branch Rickey is in this set, one of the few he's in as an executive (the other I can think of is the '60 Fleer set, when he's shown outside the office of his Continental League, which never existed except on paper). No Musial, unfortunately.

Does anybody know when his Exhibit card first came out? The image, which I believe was reused throughout the time he played with the Cardinals, shows him wearing a pre-1941 Cardinals cap. So the photo, at least, dates from no later than 1940. I understand there was some overlap between the salutation and non-salutation issues. Is it possible there was a prewar Slaughter exhibit?

Mize is wearing the pre-1941 cap (which may date back to 1939 or earlier), while Slaughter is wearing the post-1941 version, which was blue with a red bill. I seem to recall the Cards briefly used a blue and red cap with a less ornate "STL," perhaps in 1940. Curiously, the Exhibit, the 1941 Double Play and the 1947 Bond Bread cards all used the same photo, which I believe was taken before 1940. Remarkably, he looks like grizzled veteran in the photo even though he was likely about 23 years old (24 max) when it was taken ...
