I'm just trying to list & identify, & get info on the top 10 or so rarest vintage cards of Jewish players. This probably is NOT correct, but he's a go at it (not in any particular order). |

Without a doubt, the toughest (and most expensive)is the 1914 Baltimore Orioles Schedule. Lipman Pike "cards" don't exist. |

Guy Zinn's 1914 Baltimore News is no doubt the toughest out of all of them. In no real order I say these are the next three toughest. Moxie Manuels T210 because of it being part of the final series and toughest series in the set, series 8. Barney Pelty's Sporting Life Cabinet, i'm sure others can chime in much more on this but usually finding one particular player who is not a hall of famer can be a great challenge. And finally, Ed Mensors 1913 Voskamps. A few in the set show much more than others (Ferry, O'Toole, Hyatt, Miller) but besides the few we see of them every once and a while the others are extremely difficult to find and have very few existing examples to be found. |

I have been looking for Wheaties Series 15, individual serving size cards, measuring 2 5/8 by 3 7/8 inches, for quite some time, with little luck. Id say Greenburg's card from that set is pretty difficult. But Im not sure it stacks up with some of the rarities above. |

This might help expand your list a little- this is just pre 1940 releases of Jewish ballplayers. Though I'm sure there are some tough cards from the 50's and 60's (particularly of Koufax and Greenberg), these will probably represent the real scarcities. |

Mensor is also identified on the Fatima Pittsburgh team card. I've always thought team cards were pretty neat, especially where players are identified, but I realize not everyone may share this view. Mark |

What about the 1888 SF Hess Levy (minor league) card? I have only seen one other, besides Leon's. Spectacular. |

I forgot about Levy. I heard a story that he might not have been Jewish. It sure is a Jewish name though. Beckett used to have a slightly higher price on him for this reason..... since there might be a little more demand for a Jewish player. If anyone knows for sure I would like to know. It just happened that this is my type card for the set.. |

Leon, thanks for posting it. Either way, that is one great card. I saw one at a National a few years ago, with the bottom trimmed off, and they were asking $10K. If I had the money, I'd make you an offer (not that you would part with it). |

there are no "smoking guns" when trying to identify someone's faith by their surname but 'cohen' and 'levy' are the two most popular jewish last names (and offer a pretty high probability). |

That site lists major leaguer's while I am not sure that this Levy made the majors. I think I might have heard a story about his parents being 1 goyem and 1 Jewish.....so if his mom was Jewish then he was....so the religion goes......I might need to do some research here..... |

Leon - You're right... Sorry. For minor leaguers, I don't know. No one has created a very good Jewish minor league listing... |

Ah, a question for the ages (and the sages). Actually, Levy is listed in the "Big Book of Jewish Baseball," for whatever that is worth--under the minor league section. I don't think he was ever in the majors. |

I bought this card about 10 years ago with a group of other Star Player cards. Until about 2 years ago it was uncatalogued. |

Ival Goodman of the Reds in the '30s and '40s is not shown on the all time roster of Jewish Major Leaguers. Can I therefore conclude that Ival Goodman was not Jewish? |

Aha! I always wondered why Cooney was so tough in the Obak series, why Pelty's P-2 Sweet Cap pin was so hard to find, etc. These players are Jewish. Question answered. |
