I have heard (from a number of sources) that the artwork from the '33 Goudey's was done by a particular person of note.[ADDED: Two have confirmed this in the affirmative while at least one person has said it was probable, and a fourth said it was nothing more than possible.] Has anyone else heard something to this effect? |

George Burke was the photographer for many of them, if that's who you mean. |

What, if anything ties Walt to the set? This is not the artist who i had in mind. Just off the top of my head, i know he was very young at the time of production of the goudeys. I also believe he worked for disney at the time. Pogo didn't come out until the 40's so it would seem to me that he would be an unlikely candidate to actually do the artwork for the goudeys. My opinion is just that, and not really based on anything except what i do know about Kelly. |

This would be a lot easier if you gave the name you have in mind. A lot of notable arists did commercial work, for advertising and such. The painter for the 1953 Topps set was also a cartoonist for Casper the Ghost and Little LuLu. I do not know who did the coloring for the 1933 Goudeys, but it wouldn't be a shocker if it was a notable cartoonist or commercial artist. |

So who actually did the artwork for the '33 set? We know it wasn't Walt Kelly and I find it hard to believe it was Bela Lugosi, who was probably too busy making scary movies to paint hundreds of baseball images (he was reaching the peak of his career in '33). I've always been fascinated by the artwork on the most colorful sets, particularly Goudeys, Diamond Stars and 1950-52 Bowmans. Does anybody have any info on these seemingly anomymous artists? |

The original poster emailed me with his guess of who it is. He said he is working on a possible article on the subject and asked me to to divulge the name. |

My guess (or guesses) are either Bert Salg or Charles Relyea, as Norman Rockwell is too obvious. |

I highly doubt the person you are thinking of was the artist. If someone said Norman Rockwell or Walt Disney, I would want proof but would consider the name plausible. |

There is no doubt that the chances of this are slim, as connecting the artist (who lived in europe) to the activities in MA is really going to need to be backed up by documentation. It doesn't seem that many on here have any thoughts or if they do they aren't sharing. I just wondered if anyone had any thoughts. |
