I grew up in New York and loved the Yankees. I thought the Scooter was the greatest and always loved hearing him announce. Plus when the game got boring (and even when it wasn't boring), he'd always talk about beating the traffic on the George Washington Bridge, the birthdays he'd mention, and the canolis (sp?) that he always seemed to get for free. Yankee haters probably don't like the Scooter since he was such a Yankee homer, but I'm sure most Yankee fans feel fondly about him.

Sometimes his arguments w/ Bill White were more exciting then the game.
I met him twice and he seemed like a down to earth guy...jay

I grew up in Hillside (New Joisey) only two blocks away from
Phil Rizzuto's home. So, at the age of 9, I became an avid NY
Yankee fan. Phil would drive his 2-seater, Nash (Metropolitan)
down our street on his way to Yankee Stadium during home games.

He would frequent the Catholic Youth Organiz. at St. Catherine's
school on Monday nites and answer all us kids' questions and give
us great advice on playing BaseBall.

But, my fondest memory of Phil is when I ran into him at Newark
Airport (April 1984) on my way to a business trip in Chicago.
Phil and I reminisced on our old neighborhood (Phil still lives
there), while we were at the Terminal.

Then, as we boarded the plane, Phil invited me to sit with him
in the 1st Class section. During the 1-1/2 hour flight we had a
tremendous time reliving all those great years from 1947 to 1956.
It is amazing to listen to the insightful stories most of the old
ballplayers have to tell.

I played golf with Phil about four years ago at Baltusrol and it was a great experience. Sort of like listening to him on tv--"Holy Cow, will you look at that guy hit the ball.
I bought all my graded and ungraded Rizzuto cards for him to see after the round and he claimed he had never seen two of them before. After that, he signed a baseball for each of my two kids.
