I received a book for Christmas which I would like to highly recommend. The book is called "A Fine Looking Lot of Ball-Tossers" and is written by Richard McBane. The book is about the 1881 Akron, OH team. It was the best "amateur" nine in the country with many players who later starred at the professional level. Two of the stars on the team were Bid McPhee and Tony Mullane. There is great background material on both of these players as well as box scores from all their 1881 games, many of which were played against NL teams. |
