Local auction with interstesting items and need help

Hello all. There is to be an auction very near to where I live by a general auction house. There are several pre-war lots. Please click on the link to check them out.

This is by a very general auctioneer that does anything brought his way. Not too many locals here have advanced knowledge of pre-war stuff. There may be some hidden bargains here. Does anyone see anything specific and if so what do you think the true market value is? I plan on going and would like to arm myself with some extra knowledge. All help is much appreciated.

Definitely check out lot 29, the Pinkerton postcards...there's a matty, a lajoie, 2 collins, etc. Would be an awesome pickup.

The plow boy tobacco pack(lot 38)could hold substantial value to certain collectors.

Lot 89 is a nice photo of the kansas city monarchs, don't know if it's original or not though. Someone on the board definitely would know.

Lot 94 seems to have one of those 19th century cincinnati scorecards, you know the ones with the colorful design and a different player featured on each. A few board members own these and it would be a great pickup but it looks kind of odd compared to the others I've seen.

Seems like there could be a few "finds" in there but definitely check them out in person before laying down your precious greenbacks.

I know there is ALOT of junk here too, but that might give you an idea of what kind of an auction this is. By that I mean the auctioneer just puts it up and it brings what it brings. I have been to these and seen stuff got cheap and seen stuff go way too high. I will go preview in person as soon as possible. And no after much consideration I will not bid on the bananas based on your advice. The only grader for these is USDA. Not a very reputable sports authentication service.

This auction is not very far from me. Lucky for you I have to work on Friday and saturday I'm going to the NU v OU football game.

As a side note - whoever's stuff this is has been active on ebay within the last year because there are Hawaiian baseball snapshots and some other one of a kind photos that I was the underbidder on.

I'm with Daniel, if you want to pick up good bargains at these types of things you generally don't point potential competition in the right direction. However, I imagine that a lot of folks in the area that would be interested might already have seen their ad (I did). Maybe I'll see you there.

Yeah I took that into consideration but figured I'd rather have a better idea of hidden treasures and take the risk than bid blindly. Anyone gonna fly into BFE, KS to bid? I doubt. But maybe if some folks are somewhat close they would come. At worst I might be sharing with people who love to collect. If any lurkers are planning on checking it out please let me know. I can preview items you are interested in if you aren't close enough to the auction to do so, but are interested. Can't say I'll give you the truth on them though. Just kidding. Anyway how close are you Daniel?

I live in Lincoln, Nebraska which is about 3-4 hours drive. It's nice that you would share this info with other people (I wouldn't do it myself), but I would bet that there are people very near you that read this board, but never post. If you want to get a good idea how many lurkers there are here I posted about this auction this morning and it had less than 100 hits according to the hit counter on the auction and now it has 380. That's 280+ people in this chat room who have clicked on that link today.

Damian, I'll shoot you an email. I would enjoy meeting up with another board member. I'll be easy to spot as I will probably be the only person there toting their 18 month old daughter.

I invariably get too excited when I see auctions like this come up. I have been to this auction house for sports related stuff a few times and have generally been disapointed. There have been pretty good crowds and I have felt that a lot of items have gone for more than they should have. I actually wrote a pretty long post on the PSA message board that related the events of an auction they had about a year ago with a lot of 1955 Topps - I thought it was pretty interesting but then again I guess that was because I wrote it.

Thought I might make a quick post on my experience at this auction. I stopped by last night for a look at the items and for the first night of the auction. As mentioned in a previous post I had my 18 month old daughter with me so I had a pretty good feeling that this might not be such an easy adventure. The pictures on their website were pretty representative and they had a lot of interesting items. I asked the auctioneer about the order they were going to use and he told me they were going to do the tables with the new stuff mostly and work there way to the older stuff. I looked primarily at the items I was interested in and called it a day as they were likely not going to go up that night and my daughter was confirming my suspicions that bidding may be difficult.

I got there around 10:00 the next morning figuring they still had some of the new stuff to go through at 9:00. Turned out to be pretty good timing because the two cabinet cards I was interested in got auctioned (and won by me - see below. I had bid on at least one of these on ebay before and am pretty sure the other came from ebay also) within about an hour. Most of the postcards went before this and seemed to go pretty reasonably (particularly the women's baseball and team cards, most were around $2.50 - $10 each?). After I won my cards I paid for them as the girl was getting pretty tired and does not nap on demand.



After talking with the ladies at the counter I decided to place an absentee bid on the small baseball tintype (see below - crisper image than in scan with some crinkling and the name Wright written on the back) and got it for a pretty reasonable price, although it was by far the most expensive of the three. All told I got my three items for around $120.



I'm pretty happy with my take but am a little disappointed I could not delve into the other items. I think one guy may have been buying for resale and I do not know how the cards went. A guy I knew from the PSA board was there when I arrived today and was very happy with his monster box full of primarily St. Louis Cardinals and Ozzie Smith items. It looked like there may have been some nice cards but I was determined to stay focus on the stuff I wanted most for my collection.

As I was driving home I also called back and placed a relatively small absentee bid (neat image, no equipment that I could see) on the big tintype in the picture below. I am guessing this is full-plate size and was very sharp (I wasn't even sure it was a tin until I touched it). It ended up going for over $200 (I didn't win it). The auctioneers said they thought one of the guys looked a lot like Clark Griffith (which is why the Pinkerton cards are shown in the same picture); seems that a couple of bidders agreed.



If anyone else went I would be interested in hearing their thoughts. As far as I know Damian wasn't able to make it. There were really not nearly as many people there as I thought there would be - by far the best buying auction I have been to of theirs (or any live memorabilia auction for that matter). Would be interested in the card prices and cigarette pack pricing. I had a feeling that deals could be had if the item didn't have a price guide entry associated with it.

I knew I should have skipped the Husker game!

Nice pick ups....I bid on the cabinet card with the player lying on the floor on ebay probably a little less than a year ago. I can't complain too much as I picked up a Spalding ring bat, 6 prewar gloves, and a 1910ish catcher's mask at auction last week for less than $100 total. Then on Thursday I picked up a 1939 Joe Stripp baseball glove with an "1839-1939 Baseball Centennial" stamping, a Ken O'Dea Wilson catcher's mitt, a really nice 1930's Reach catcher's mask and a few old baseballs for $41 at another auction. Oh and my brother found a 1959 All Star game ticket stub (2nd game/Los Angeles) for me in a lot of Husker and Steeler memorabilia he bought from the wife of a former Pittsburgh Steeler.

It's been raining memorabilia in my area this past summer.

I had my brother buy the Pinkerton lot that was for sale there. I bought all of them for $25. Not bad considering there were 2 Collins, Lajoie, Baker and a Mathewson plus a couple of commons. I was unable to make the show obviously and only hope there are legit cards. They were descrbed by my brother on the phone as having no creases at all and in very nice shape. If they are real - I will say that my $25 buy is the best that has ever happened to me. I also wish I could have been there as I think that there were some very nice buys at the auction. I wanted the Mathewson and the others most likely will be for resale once they come back from SGC when I get them.
