Can any Obak experts out there offer any insight as to why these cards are so vivid, even compared to T206? In art terms, they have a luminosity that makes the images jump right off the card at you, like an oil painting rendered with lots of washes.

I think the printing ink is entirely different. Obaks have a lacquer like surface that leads to crazing on many of them, T206's and 205's have a more pastel finish, T207's also have similar lacquer like finish, but not vibrant colors like Obaks.

Like Peter Thomas, I am no expert on these cards; However, I
have had many of the OBAKs over the years. And, every one them
exhibit more vivid colors than the T205 and T206 cards. This is
really evident, especially, in the detailed backgrounds of the
OBAKs. The detailed backgrounds of the T206 cards are not as
distinct, and many are usually "fuzzy".

The Allen & Ginters cards and the N162 Goodwins were produced
in New York printing firms. And, I think the T205-6 cards were
also. The OBAKs, is my understanding, were produced elsewhere.
And, certainly at a higher quality printing firm.

The 1909 Obaks are quite different from the 1910 and 1911 series cards. The colors on the '09s are very muted, more pastel and don't have the eye appeal of the 10s and 11s. They are also a jillion times harder to find.

My understanding is that 1910's have a certain 'gloss' and they are the first cards to have such.

Certainly the 1909, 1910, and 1911 obaks all have their unique characteristics...

I deterred away from T206s for a spell and was acquiring Obaks. I loved the images = players out in big fields with buildings only faintly behind them, and usually vibrant skies, and living in Seattle, I loved the Pacific NW connection.

In 1995 at the St. Louis National I couldn't decide between an EXMT 1911 Obak Weaver in EXMT with a diamond cut for $75 or a VGEX one for $75. I ended up spending the $75 on some card that is probably still worth $75 today I finally decided on the VGEX one and when I went back later in the day it was gone. I thought the EXMT one with the diamond cut was not that great of a buy. Anyone here end up with either of those? Now my 1911 Obak set is complete with a F-G one that cost more than $75. Shrewd business acumen, huh?
