Paul, I'm sure not of your ebay id, so did you come close to winning? My bid was the leader with 9 seconds to go, but $2400 short in the end..lol. |

Given the fact that McPhee is on the want list of most HOF collectors it's probably not out of line. Shocking, yes, but probably not out of line. |

The winner is actually a father/son tag team. I sold them a couple of Old Judges a while back. I've actually met the father half of the duo, but I have only spoken to the son. Both are extremely nice. |

Boy, that seems to be a real high price. I know that a lot of people need him for their Hall Of Fame collections, but it still seem too much. |

I agree that the price was too high. McPhees seem to be coming out. The Oregon find had three, here is one, the Mastro auction had one. To my knowledge no pose of McPhee is any more difficult than any other pose. |

I am not suprised at all by the frenzy over Old Judge McPhee cards - if you want a card of every available HOFer then you have to have it, and it is certainly in limited supply. My question is why doesn't this phenomenon translate to other HOFers who have fewer existing cards and are arguably more deserving denizens of Cooperstown's hallowed halls. I'm speaking, of course, of the great Negro League HOFers that are represented in the Cuban and Puerto Rican sets - Hilton Smith, Leon Day, Oscar Charleston, Pop Lloyd, etc. I don't mean this post to be self-serving, I'd really like to hear opinions on this subject. |

They didn't play in the major leagues, and a lot of people are less familiar with them or in fact never heard of them. Also, Old Judge is a classic set- the Negro League players might show up in Aguilitas or Billiken or not at all. Many factors involved here. |

According to hobby references there are 5 Bid McPhee poses for the N172 set so it really shouldn't be so scarce. He was inducted into the HOF in 2000. Most people probably hadn't even heard of Bid McPhee prior to that and most people could probably care less about having his card (up to that point). |

I was out of town when this auction ended, and was disguisted, but not surprised, by the price. I'll have to keep looking. Don't these exist in lower grade? |

Mayo Nichols (I know there's a N172, but I've never been close to getting one--and ther Mayo is a great card). Wilbert Robinson--also in the Old Judge, but I only have the Mayo. Just got a Hamilton Old Judge--have had a Mayo for years. And my only Brouthers is an N162 (except for Scrapps and Tobin Litho.). Why does everything have to be Old Judge. I like them too, but 6K for THAT Old Judge? I think it's too much... |

Sadly, McPhee is only in Old Judge -- at least as far as cards go. I know you have that nice scorecard, but I'm looking for a card card. |

I guess I'd have to say "it depends". The more I could convince myself that the cabinet card was available in some way to the public, the more I would consider it a "card," and the more likely I would bid on it. But if it was just made for the player or his family, or otherwise was unavailable to the public, I wouldn't. |
