Anonymous E78 backed Cy Young

In the name of trying to "practice what I preach." This is a card I got recently. I got if from a fellow board member. I thought it was an E79 back....however Pete C. corrected me : Here's what he had to say (and copied with his (your as I know you read the board Pete) approval-


"And even better than I thought. That back, it isn't an E79...IT'S A E78!!! E79s say "27 Scrappers" on the back.
E78s are THE rarest candy boxing set and there is no sponsor, it's an
"Anonymous" issue as are e101s and E102s and your card proves the same cards that Dockman, Croft's, Nadja etc. sponsored were all printed in the same location and at roughly the same time as American caramel issues. E77s mention American Caramel and the E78 set matches it very closely in artistic style and the E78s were just assumed to be American Caramel as well - I don't think we can say that any more.

E78 seems more closely related to E102 since it's a 'set of 25' with a similar stairstep printing style.

Before someone gets the wrong idea let's not call this an "E78 Young". It shouldn't even say "E101" as there is no way to prove it. E78 is a boxing set that has no sponsor on the back and I have always treated it as an "Anonymous" set but others have called it an American Caramel set for the reason Leon mentioned.

What makes this card so important is that the art used for for this card can be found in a number of sets sponsored by American Caramel and their competitors. It is now possible to say the American Caramel sets AND other sets were printed at the same location at the same time.

There is no way to assign a set name to this card but Rob is correct, the way the back is designed matches the E102 set but there are other sets of various themes that use this checklist style so I hesitate to say it's "relates" to any one particular set but could mean the sets with this style checklist was the same person and was simply his personal "style" or could have been a intentional selling format presented to candy companies.

...but isn't it printer's scrap? The back is printed upside-down and way off-center - looks like the printer was running a test either for the front or back, and used a scrap sheet.

My opinion, It is most likely an E101 as Cy Young is not found in E102. I was the previous owner and was surprised that all of you missed it on eBay about 6 months back. It went for far less than what a normal E101 Young (SCG-30) would go for. On a related note, a long time ago, I also remember seeing a card, maybe an E92, that had an E26 Menagerie Gum back (Anamal cards). Anyone else have E baseball cards that have nonsport/othersport backs?? Very interesting cards, wish I could have kept it (E78), but I know it has a good home now.

PS Leon (and others) I'll get to your emails later today, I got way behind and had other thing (family stuff) I needed to take care of before I took more orders. I also screwed up and sold the same card to 2 people and had to go over my inventory to make sure I removed sold items. sorry for delays. Frank

being as I am researching perpetually for my book, what was the cost of the card at the initial sale and on the resale?

Pete is right about the E78 set. It is much rarer than the E107 set in terms of raw numbers of cards out there. I have seen under a dozen transact over the last 5+ years and several of those were from one seller. I've saved nearly every E78 image I've ever seen and I've only got 8 of them. If anyone has a Berger and Jeffries card, BTW, I will trade truly silly amounts of HOF baseball for it.

I originally paid $132 on eBay, and it was 4 months back, not 6 like I said earlier. It was sold as part of a package deal to Leon so I cant really put a price on it, Id say he paid 3 times more but got a deal in my opinion. Frank

You can't call it an E101 just because there isn't an E102 of Young. The art or pose of that card was used for the E92 sets, the E90-1 set as well a couple tobacco issues. There is no way to tell what set that card was intended for.

Scott, I would agree with you that it is printers scrap. No other real explination as to why it would look that way. As you mentioned, most likely a test run by the printer using whatever whas laying around with at least one side clean.
