Love that "Keep the Dodgers in Brooklyn" pin. I picked one up via an SCD classifed ad in the late 1970s for $10 when I was teen-ager. Traded it away a few years later. I still rue that day, and I don't really collect anything other than Cleveland Indians items. Anyway, nice pinback!

Thanks, Joe. I've always liked everything about that card: the pose, the bat, the background. (BTW, good luck on the Matty eBay auction. I'm still debating whether to take the plunge on that set or just be content with the Lajoie. Guess I have 6-plus days to decide.)

The "Bowers" in your Chambersburgh postcard is Jack Bowers and he went on to a fairly distinguished minor league career in the Virginia League and other teams of that vicinity from about 1908-15 or so. I used to have all sorts of stuff from his estate and he was a great minor league player and appearantly fairly tough to get to sign a contract and stay in one place for more than a few months.

I'm pretty sure that Cal Hubbard is in the second row, second from the right. I also believe that the Native American in the back row - third from left is John Levi who broke or threatened most of Jim Thorpe's records at the Haskell Institute.

Thanks for that great info Rhys. I'll look into Bower's career when I get a few extra minutes. I have 2 of these postcards, identical except for the fact that one is marked 1907 on the front, the other isn't.

I picked up this football postcard at a flea market today. It looks to me based on the uniform and football to be a late 1890's player. Not a great postcard or anything, and the picture is pretty blurry, but for a buck, I couldn't pass it up.

I did a little googling and determined that Chillicothe Business College is in Chillicothe, Missouri (my home state). Cal Hubbard was born in Keytesville, Missouri, but every reference I could find, says that he attended Centenary College in Louisiana from 1922-1924. Perhaps he went to this little business school first? It certainly looks like him. Nice card!!!

I am fairly certain that Cal Hubbard is pictured on this postcard...Levi I am less certain. They both did attend CBC....I just haven't found anything solid that they both attended in 1920.

"Football became well known at Chillicothe Business College in the early part of the 20th century. Two athletes who became nationally known played with the C.B.C. Ducks. Although neither Cal Hubbard nor John Levi were native Livingston County young men, they both played for the local college team and later became All-American Football player’s when chosen to Grantland Rice’s Dream Team. John Levi went from Chillicothe to Haskell Institute and Cal Hubbard became a starting tackle with the professional Green Bay Packers. Hubbard later became an American League Baseball umpire for many years."

Obviously the rules about eligibility were different back in those days as some of these guys went from one college to the next. Hubbard by my calculation played college football on and off between 1920 and 1926 at three different schools.
