With all of the talk in a previous thread about the money it takes to collect cool stuff I don't think that's always the case, by any means. Yes, to get a Four Base Hits card, or a Bid McPhee N172, or an Anson in uniform, it might take a lot of money, however there are other things that don't cost a few mortgage payments (or more) to buy. I gotta say I was just about as excited getting this last night on ebay, for $26, as I am some other things that have cost far more. Collecting CAN be done on a budget..... ALSO, has anyone seen this particular candy company's stamp on the back of other cards? If anyone has any of these type (different advertisers) backs I would like to hear what they are and what card they are on. As a collector of overprints and scarce backs this is really cool.....(the Pipp card is the one I am talking about, obviously)....breast regards

Leon, I actually picked up the same Pipp card (but with a National Caramel) back at a show a few weeks ago, as my entrance back into the pre-War market. I paid $30 for mine. I'd give it a VG, no creases, decent eye appeal. If you're collecting by rare backs, then it's a good deal. I personally am trying to purchase cards in the best condition, as I always regret going for the low-grade stuff afterwards.

I agree completely about buying the best conditioned cards (short of new PSA 9 and PSA 10 crap, which I think is a foolish long term play) as you can. I will also tell you that when you see something you have never seen before, and have been doing this relentlessly for several years, you grab what you can... when you can. The National Caramel (E220 series) is really cool but they all have the same type back. I have never seen this candy company on another card....yet....so I nabbed it. Good luck in the pre-war effort. It's really fun about 99% of the time....here's another rare advertiser on the back of an E120/W573....I've seen 2 of them and have them both...... regards

I often hunt and hunt for bargains...my collecting friends have actually walked out of shows or stores without me because I am willing to search through hundreds of box, crates, drawers, corners, etc. for interesting stuff...Some of my best finds have come from searching through stuff like that. Being on a limited income, I tend to look for lesser grade stuff but every now and then I find something in great condition. A few years ago, I bought a N-300 Lowe in ex condition for $62 shipped. I bought my '41 Playball set (avg. vg) for $300. I bought my T-205 Matty and Johnson (in g-vg) for $35 each about 5 years ago.

I save money for larger purchases but have been very successful in putting my T-205 together and never spending more than $45 on any single card (except the Cobb where I spent $150). I am nine cards away now and I am finding myself willing to spend a little more...

Still hoping to find a T-205 Drum back in poor condition for less than $100. I can dream can't I?

The National Caramel card of Pipp is a different in action photo that has a full photographic backround. Perhaps the one you picked up is an American Caramel?

Correct....I think the Pipp is a W575 or a Koester Bread card of 1921. The SCD says you can not tell them apart. But I don't believe, as you don't, it is exactly what was advertised..I didn't mind though...regards
