1950's t206 reprint set

Two "new" cards from the 1950's reprint set of the t206s have shown up recently on ebay. The set seems to have been fairly well-done. Here are the two newest examples (to go with the 2 Cobb portraits and the Lajoie batting): http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1847453344

I gave the seller my phone number and asked him to call me (usually these guys get real defensive when you try to alert them via email). He declined my offer to talk on the phone, then, curiously, ended the Matty auction early, claiming that the "card was damaged by spilled kool-aid drink ,sorry"

and explained to him why a red Old Mill back was a red flag. Hopefully ebay won't see fit to suspend me for trying to be an honest person ala Frank, as God knows they turn their eyes on the dishonest people out there.

that wasn't necessary - all he had to do was say that he had been alerted that it was a reprint.

In any case, I heard back from a guy that has been selling reprints from that set. I had always thought that it consisted entirely of HOF'ers, but he said that he owns many of the commons as well. I wonder how it was distributed.

Anyone who collects T206 would know there's something wrong with a card that has borders as wide as a T220 card.

These are not 1950s reprints. These are from the late 1970s and were issued by Renata Galasso.

They were issued as the centerfold of a magazine/catalog that was published, I believe quarterly. They were preforated and the backs were printed in red or black. I believe the entire T206 set was issued.

I believe the famous, yet never seen, Piedmont black back came from these reprints as well.

I'd never heard of T206 reprints being made from the '50s until the T206 wagners were popping up all over the place on ebay and I thought it was just some scam.

Were there really reprints of T206 cards made in the 1950s?

These "50s" reprints (if that's what they are) don't look like any trimming was done on the borders (to remove perforation marks) - they just look like old reprints, with the type of wear you would expect to see on a 50-yr old "card". But clearly some have been doctored to make them look even older. Also, I have been told by at least one older collector (sorry, I don't remember who) that the 50's set was not complete.

Someone I've been exchanging emails with, who claims to have the entire set, but won't give me the specifics I've asked for, just offered his set (whatever that means) to me for $600.

In the 2001 Standard Catalog of Baseball Cards (page 306) the 1964-67 and 1971 Sport Hobbyist "Famous Card Series" sets are catalogued. T206 Honus Wagner is listed as the #1 card for the '64-67 edition. The '71 series (of 20 cards) are exclusively T206. These cards range in size from 2" by 3" to 2-1/4" by 3-3/4" and are black and white. They were issued purely for their information and promotional value and could not be passed off as originals.

I've been active in the hobby since the 1950s, and professionally every day of my life since 1980, and I've never seen proof of any reprint of T206 earlier than the 1980s. There were some pictures of T206 and others in the May, 1950, Holiday magazine, but they weren't even pictures of complete cards.

The cards in the "1971 Sport Hobbyist" set only use the photo part of the T206 card, the rest of the design is far different, there is no caption on front, border pinstrip has a wavy design, and back is 100% different. It is not a T206 reprint set, just looks slightly similar. I agree with Mr. Lemke, I have never heard of pre1980's T206 reprints. Heck back in the 50's you could get 95% the T206 set for 10 cents to $1 each, in nice shape. Cobbs a few dollars, Wagner a couple hundred at most. Hey TBob, I also contacted the high bidder on the Mathewson and Young, cards too, I just never learn. He wrote back and thanked me, and I gave him info on good reference guides, etc. He is new to PreWar, so the back ink color was a new one to him. Oh well. Frank

by starting with high-dollar items. I probably bought 50 t206 commons, studying each very carefully under a magnifier and driving you guys nuts with questions, before I spent more than $60 on a card.

I remember spending $19 for Ex t205 Matty in 1981 as my first t205 purchase. But then in those innocent days, there wasn't too much concern about trimming, reprints or other nasty things other than scummy dealers trying to sell beat up 1956 Clemente's for $10.
