Default Cards that elude?

What card or cards have eluded you for years? Is it because the card is scarce or the price was too high?

A T206 with the multi-strike (Lash's Bitters) back. Part of this is price, part is availability.

I'll probably get one some day. They're hard to find; however, there aren't that many people looking for them. Ideally, one will surface at the Philly Show and I can work out a cash/trade deal.

W600 Cobb. Had a chance at one years ago but I bought the W600 type 1 Wagner in same auction instead. I don’t regret the decision, but I would like a w600 Cobb one day

E92 etc. Mathewson. Combination of reasons -- too out of register, price insane, or just didn't act fast enough.

E90-1 Tris Speaker. It’s been hard to find one with eye appeal and in lower grade. Plus it being tough and seldom seen in general.

My elusive list is 90% a scarcity issue; possibly stuff that doesn't exist or that is 1-of-1, though there are a few elusive cards that I cannot possibly afford mixed in there, like the Capital Candy & Cracker Thorpe or a 1923 Exhibit Ruth. No hope of winning those at auction.

1930 Baguer Chocolate Joe McCarthy that's not beat the hell up.

I've seen examples come and go over the years, but most are in terrible condition. I don't mind some wear, but I want the front clean and the back stamp at least mostly intact.

1913 Zeenut Jimmy Lewis, last card I need for a complete player run. I have all the extremely tough/rare cards in the run but this one eludes me (shaking my fist at the card gods in the sky).

As a single players collector, I have too many to name. But they are all due to scarcity.

Just scarcity. Couple of last Mays issues that I can’t find. Although I suppose it’s also possible that if one of the current owners puts it on the market, they might ask for more than I’m willing to pay.

The last two 1924 Diaz I need

Guy Morton, Pete Donohue. One Morton was graded and sold on ebay, guessing he was the only one that sold before the first batch I saw made it to Goodwin. But I haven't heard where the heck he went to since then. I haven't seen a 2nd one either. Donohue's are all raw so that'll happen when it happens.

Also the last Hage Dairy I need

1951 Russ Christopher

I get the sense Christopher is like as short a print as it gets since he was only in San Diego at the very beginning of the season. Still the Hage is the card his wikipedia page uses, so it just sits there taunting me...

Honestly I'd love to just know where the hell any of the 3 are at this point

I've been looking for a Hage's Dairy Tommy Bridges for over a decade now and the closest I've gotten is very old scan a member provided me to prove it does actually exist.

1910 Old Mill Joe Jackson.

My holy grail card and it is both rare and pricy.

Approx 8 years ago or so a Authentic Alteree was for sale but I was not liquid enough to go after.

Ryan picked up a beautiful one a few years ago well beyond what I could at that time.

Hopefully next time around I am in the game and some of my current cards might have to go to get it. Of course if the price is right.

1938 Clopay Foto Fun - Beau Bell
1921 D383 / W575 - Rip Collins

Both due to scarcity. Ive seen 1 Foto Fun and its not for sale. Ive seen 1 D383/W575 and I was a day late on the BIN.

Would pay significantly for either, of course.

Default 1912 Ralph Kreitz Home Run Kisses

With regards to the Ralph Kreitz HRK card, I have seen 2 examples posted by board members, so I know the card exists.

I believe I have all the other "catcher pose" Home Run Kisses and would like to finish my run of catchers in the set.

Not too many things left on my want list at this point.

Maybe the 1915 Bruno Block Zeenut with coupon from Leon's original collection.

The one I have been trying to find for at least ten years now is, believe it or not, a 1970 Topps Super card of Lance Alworth. I know you're thinking it's a pretty common issue, and it is. However, I have been able to obtain all of the other cards in the set in perfectly centered condition except for Lance. When I mean perfectly centered, I'm taking about not seeing any of those annoying cut lines around the perimeter. And his card is tough in that respect, believe me. I've even seen cards of Alworth that show cut lines along both the right and left sides on the same card! So I'm still looking.

Items that have eluded me due to scarcity and/or price at the time available:
  1. A clean and unaltered N173 of any Pittsburgh or Indianapolis player.
  2. A clean and unaltered Carl Horner cabinet.
  3. A pre-1980 World Series player ring.

A solid looking 1911 Zeenut Halla. They're out there, but the price is too askew for what I'm willing to pay these days. Passed up way too many 20 years ago thinking $250 for a PSA6 was a bit steep at the time...insert many facepalms here .

Happy Holidays to all of you!

Bill

Thanks Adam, never seen any Capital Candy cards before, let alone the Thorpe. They are cool! Maybe somehow a collecting miracle will occur and a Thorpe will end up in your collection.

Didn’t even realize til this thread that there were Pro Star postcards AND posters! Wow.

As for my card that eludes me, it’s the 1950 Hage’s Dairy Kenny Washington. I’ve only been looking for a couple years so I won’t give up hope. Leads always appreciated.

There are a lot of grails that elude, but one that i missed at the Halper auction and have never seen again is an N173 of Dummy Hoy. Had someone bidding for me in that auction and he got distracted and missed it! Ugh. Anyone have one for sale?

This exact card. I blew an opportunity to add it back in 2008 and then underbidder on the auction in Heritage. Would pay a finders fee if anyone knows who has it.

can I submit the highest graded autographed 1948/49 Leaf Jackie Robinson, with PSA card grade 7.5? never been able to even find a picture of it.

then the 1950/51 Toleteros Josh Gibson. havent seen at auction in over 4 years. there was a redemption stamp version that came up this year, but the unstamped has been a ghost of late.

This one sold just over three years ago.

I like Negro League items, but I am not sure what to think of this one. I view it more as a commemorative card since it was made three years after his passing.

WOW, Kerry Lightenberg. Do you collect Kerry or need it to complete a set? My younger brother is married to his cousin.

I picked up a raw one a couple of years ago at an auction, but I did have to buy the rest of the set to get it (except for the Ryan, which was separated out).

Somewhat shockingly, they often don’t sell for very much for as rare as they are.

Being more opportunistic I don't have many.

One I look for but off and on
T209 Blackstone. Just don't see them, although there have been a couple in lots.

And one that took years but shouldn't have
88 Topps Canseco. By the time it was the last card I needed, it was no longer a dollar card, a price I wouldn't have paid earlier, but being the last one...
No joy. Every shop said they had a bunch, nobody was willing to find them in the back room for the 25 cents that was then full price.

Took 2 years to find one.
I did consider just buying a set, but that was just too much just to get one card and was sort of cheating.
