Default Babe Ruth jersey set an auction record, now what?

The Heritage Babe Ruth Called Shot Jersey went for a record $24.12 million:

https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/...hes-record-24m

This sale blows away the 2022 Rosen 1952 Mantle sale of $12.6 million.

My question is have we hit the pinnacle of sports auction house sales? I really don't see an item going higher in the next few years or so. Even if a PSA 10 1952 Mantle came out, I don't think it beats the Jersey price. What say you?

It will be interesting to see if this uniform comes back up in auction soon.

It was probably purchased by some shiny card manufacturer so it can be cut up in to hundreds of "patches" to be sold to the minions of those who have no regard for history or preservation of relics. Lord, I really hope I'm wrong, but nothing would surprise me these days.

I'd like to know more about the jersey but I don't think details will be offered up. The biggest question I have about the jersey is how it came to be associated with the called shot. It was sold at least twice as a road jersey and then someone started looking at it as the called shot jersey. I'd love to know why.

Fair questions.
I will go out on a limb and say most people, or groups, spending 24 million dollars on a jersey, have done their own due diligence. There were tons of anti-shirt rumors going around but in the end, it brought the price. At least that is how I see it right now.

To answer the question, what's next? No one knows!

Default Who bought it ?

Would love to know who shelled out that much cabbage for it.

Doubt a card company did. Too high to turn a profit on. Even if you cut it into a million pieces.

Doubt an investment group. There's just too much dead money on top.

Doubt a museum did. They are smarter with their money,(spread it around more) and wouldn't put all their eggs in this basket.

My only guess is some billionaire with money to blow.

Who knows ?

No chance. To the best of my knowledge, none of the card companies have cut up a real significant jersey in over a decade. They've taken to cutting up pants and bats, likely mostly because the price of the items has become so expensive, but also possibly because they recognize the damage in the destruction of these items.

(For players like Ruth, Koufax, Mantle etc, you can see many of the items are now labeled as not being from their MLB playing days as this has been the direction things have moved. This won't put the cut up pieces back together, but I believe that that era has passed.)

You are right ! Especially in football. Where they use cheap "event worn" or "player used" pieces. One of the main reasons I moved over here to vintage.

AND it will be just another fake, albeit expensive Relic card!

More power to the winner and Congratulations!

Apparently they were able to photo match it based on THIS image.

I kid, I kid.....I'm sure there was more to it than this.

Right?

Maybe Mohammed bin Salman won it! If he can pay US$450.3 million for Leonardo da Vinci's Salvator Mundi, then what's $24.12 million??

Didn't he pay for the painting with a credit card so that he could get airline miles for his family to fly for free?

Now we pretend like it's actually the jersey worn by Ruth in the game that he is rumored to have "called the shot".

My guess is that it was either Michael Rubin of Fanatics, Steve Cohen of the Mets, or maybe Nat Turner (w/partners) of PSA.

Now what?

Think I'll go back to ignoring it, just like I've been doing.

Not sure that anything selling for $24M has any connection to my collection.

Particularly not a sketchy jersey of questionable provenance linked to a mythical event.

Now, if something I have in my collection is going for $24M these days, then that's a more exciting question to decide what I'll do with all that sweet, sweet cash once I find an AH to take my consignment and agree to give me most of the juice.

I’m holding out for the “Casey At The Bat” photo matched jersey AND bat that Coach’s Corner has rumored for their October auction.

I’d be willing to pay up to dozens of dollars for those priceless heirlooms.

Might have to up the ante from dozens to scores to win it.

Not sure if there are any history buffs here, but an auction house has confirmed that they have photo-painting-matched the boat Washington crossed the Delaware in.

Pretty frickin' cool!!!

Should bring some serious coin in their next auction...

Do you have a link? I can't find it.

All I know about this jersey is that it sold once as a generic 1930 road jersey, then it had become a 1932 World Series jersey and now it was the jersey he wore during the called shot. But I don't know how people got from 1930 road jersey to the called shot.

Right?
Appears to be the same camera and/or film stock used for the photo of the Loch Ness monster. Now THAT'S quite a coincidence, no?

I guess the next time it sells then, it will be called his ROOKIE jersey !!!
I know ... that doesn't make any sense, right? But nothing in our hobby does !!
