There is very little information found in old newspapers about the Coupon cigarettes I found this cigarette sales ad in an Austin Texas newspaper that has Coupon cigarettes in it.
Coupon Cigarette Ad Austin_American_Statesman_Sat__Mar_14__1914_.jpg Here are few images I found of two different Coupon packs Coupon Cigarette pack.jpg Coupon pack 2 side.jpg Coupon Pack 2.jpg and a 200 count carton with 10 packs of 20 (I'm not sure where the claim that they were packed loose in these cartons came from). Great item, and especially love the Fusco Auction sticker you still have on it. Did you get that at one of Paul's live, in-person auctions, or from bidding online? God, I miss those in-person live auctions of his.

Bob, I think it was from liveauctioneers. I've had it for 8 -10 years. I just looked and it appears that Fusco has not had an auction on that platform since 2018. I may have also bought it from someone who left the sticker on like I did.

And Paul also ran the Strongsville Sports Collectors Show as well for a period, right up until his passing. I noticed the Strongsville Show, which is usually held in April every year, is now a forum sponsor. Great vintage only oriented show. Highly recommend it for anyone that can get there. And no, I am not in any way involved with the show or its sponsors. And also sorry for getting OT on this thread. Some great items being shown in this thread. |

Jerome - I've always loved that RPPC!
I have always thought that the cartons in that RPPC are the best candidate for where the T213-1s were assuming the carton theory is correct. I think the cartons and packs posted here (apart from mine and Jon's) are later - 1920s - 1930s. I think I came across a larger Coupon pack at one time as well, similar to the Red Cross packs that are out there, that had the 1910s look and feel, but I don't think I have a picture.

The newspaper find shows us that Coupon "20 for 5 cent" packs were sold in Austin, which is further west than I thought the cards are usually found.
I'm not a cigarette pack guy. Are the "20 for 5 cents" packs posted here wide enough to have had a T213-2 card in them? From the pics, they look tall and narrow, and tightly packed.

Right you are Pat, these should be pre-1919 and T213-3. What I didn't know was whether the side of of Jon's pack had the 20 for 5 on it, but looking at the one you posted more closely I see that they are the same pack, so Jon's does have that on the side.
Mine still has the cigarettes but no card - which might explain the state of the wrapper. I will measure it -- and also loupe it for the last number in the year. I recall not being able to see anything apart from the 191 part and the bit of printing further to the right. The larger pack that I saw seemed like it had potential to have held type 1s in it - I wish I had taken a picture. I might be misremembering this too. I will see if I can track it down. Total speculation, but if T213-1 was a New Orleans-only issue and T213-2 was Louisiana and Texas it might explain the greater number of T213-2s out there.

Here’s also a mid-teens slide and shell from my collection. It’s actually the only slide and shell I’ve seen, but my guess is there are more out there.

Nice packs, Jon. Are there any markings about price on the packs you posted? What do you make of the Indian logos having 2 types? Here are side by sides of your packs logos.

The soft is a 20 count, with the 20 for 5 cents labeling on the sides. The slide and shell is a 10 count, and is the same size as other traditional 10 count slide and shells.
In terms of the images, I'd have to look closely. I wonder if some of the differences are just the angles the photos are at. I didn't dig them out to re-photograph them, so both those snaps are quite old. I can dig them out this evening though.

Thanks for the update.
On the images, the packs that Pat, Bryan, and Jon posted that say "20 for 5 cents" on the side, have a dot matrix Indian character logo. The pack that I posted with the factory 42 label, has an Indian logo that is slightly different from the Factory 3 packs. My packs' logo does not have dot matrix. It looks more like a realistic image and less like a drawing. Look at the headdresses, the feathers are different. The second pack, the 10 count slide pack, has the same image as my Factory 42 pack, which makes me think it was made at a later time. I'm hoping to find out what pack a T213-2 (20 for 5 cents) back coupon card came in.

Here’s better photos of my 2.
Rob - my slide and shell is sometime post-1910 and pre-1918. No cancel on the stamp.

Thanks for the pics and info, Jon. I guess I need better glasses. I don't know why I was seeing 2 different logos. In your last post, they do look the same now.

Rob,
I think it was just the angle of the photos. While the slide and shell is a crisper photo, up close they appear to be identical designs. - Jon

I've unsuccessfully been trying to find ads in old newspapers with pictures of coupon packs to possibly date some of the packs that have been posted. There are differences in all of the packs posted in this thread particularly in this area of the headdress.
