MLB Trade Deadline - My blockbuster - a PSA 1 52 Mantle

I recently acquired a 52 Topps Hoyt Wilhelm, which was the last big card from the 52 set that I needed (other than the Mantle). With the Mantle looming on the horizon, things have gotten real, and the urge to complete the set has taken over.

Maybe I will get laughed off the boards, but I figured I would at least cast my net into the waters. I know this is an extremely long shot, but is anyone interested in exploring a trade for a PSA 1 52 Mantle? I could offer all of the following cards in the deal. I know that 20 lesser cards for one mega card is not everyone's cup of tea, but I figured it doesn't hurt to ask. Maybe someone out there upgraded to a higher grade Mantle and is looking to move their PSA 1 for other stars? Asking around is what the trade deadline is about right?!

If anyone is interested in at least discussing, I can send additional photos, give more detail, talk through things on the phone, etc. I am relatively new on these boards but have loved the interaction to date.

Congrats on only needing Mantle now, Chris.

Just curious, are you looking for a trade only or willing to sell what you have in order to purchase one?

You have some real nice cards there and if they weren't so expensive for me, I'd be all over your Mathews and Campy cards.

I still need about 40 or so of the high number commons but unless I really am going to finish the set then I can’t bring myself to spend thousands on the Ebba St. Claire’s of the world. So I’ve decided to see if acquiring a Mantle is even a possibility right now. At the moment I’m not yet ready to sell these individually. I don’t want the missing pieces in my collection unless there is a Mantle in the foreseeable future. I’d hate to only be able to sell a few of these, not be able to generate enough cash for a Mantle, and then be left with no Mantle, or Aaron, Mays, Clemente for example. So for now we’ll see if anyone with a PSA 1 is intrigued. But if I do decide to sell anything this board will be the first to know. Thanks again, everyone, for the well wishes.

I don’t have an extra Mathews, Mays, Campy (or anything else). I just figured I needed to include those cards in the deal to make it worth it for someone and then figured it might me easier to re-acquire them then it would be to get a Mantle.

But it brings up a good question now that it’s been a few days with no interest. Do you all think my offer is fair? Not enough? Too much? My thought is that if someone were to trade a single keystone card for several smaller cards that person should receive a premium. And to the best of my estimation, from a “today’s dollars” perspective I would be slightly over paying with these 20 cards but what do you all think - fair offer assuming a Mantle owner is open to trading for several cards?

My hope is that if someone is looking to move a Mantle they may be of the opinion that it would be easier to move several less expensive cards of similar monetary value than one huge card. Or maybe they think the Cobbs, Aaron, Mays, etc have more room for growth than a low grade Mantle. Who knows! Maybe I’m trying to talk myself out of the offer now lol

At the end of the day, they're your cards, that being said, I'd rather that entire list of cards you have than the 52 topps Mantle, and I'm a Mantle collector. those are some Iconic cards to the hobby right there, sure maybe if you want to sell a couple of them to finance your Purchase of a Mantle down the line, but I think you should stick with what you got.

Since it sounds like you'd love to complete the '52 set, I would never want to be in a position where I'd given up that much (yet still had to get those three cards again). Especially after the Mays pandemic spike.

I know you said your frame of mind will be a lot better to complete the set if you have Mantle, but I think having to reacquire those other huge '52s is too much of a problem (and too costly) to go about getting the set that way.

If you think you could reacquire Mathews, Mays, and Campanella down the road, then I'm assuming you might be able to get the Mantle a little later instead if you'd (theoretically) liquidated everything else on that list, but kept all '52s.

Totally hear you and I’ve gone back and forth on this a million times. Like a lot of people I’m sure, the 52 Mantle has always been THE card for me. And now that I’m 350-some cards into the set, 52 Topps has become my top collecting priority. Giving up Mays, Mathews and Campanella is not something I’m very excited for, but I’ve gotten to the point where, for the right Mantle, I would do it, and then I would put the next year or two into re-acquiring those three. Knowing myself, that just seems more attainable. I don’t know that I’d ever be able to save the cash to purchase a Mantle outright. But again, unless there is someone out there who is intrigued by the deal, I guess it doesn’t matter. Still a few days till the trade deadline though
