Civil War button?

Found this button in the woods of my property in North Florida.
A quick Google image search seems to lean toward a CSA button.
Was wondering if anyone on here has any expertise in this area and what you think.

Nice find, it is a droop wing button. Can you take a picture of the back? is the shank still attached. It may be Union. There should be some sort of manufacture name on the back of the button. That can help with the identification.

And now you need to invite me to detect your back yard!!!!!

No back, so to speak.
Hallow if that makes sense.
I have 10 acres of woods and have already found amber Clorox glass bottles dated to the 50's. And other assorted bottles.
I found this at the other end of the property in heavy woods.
I am about 10 miles from the Suwanee and I know there was a CSA fortification there.
Hoping but I don't know if this is legit or not.

I would say it is Civil War era based on others I have seen. Whether it is CSA or USA, I am not that well versed. If it would have had a back it certainly would have been easier to nail down.

That being said, pretty sure it is period for sure. Hollow backs are not uncommon either. They would crimp a back and a front together with a piece of cotton or such in the middle of them.

I found a NY State Excelsior button in Virginia that fell apart when I released it from the ground and it had cotton batting in it.

Maybe wonder back in that area to see if the back is somewhere near by. I would certainly run a metal detector over that ground. There may be more relics there just waiting for you to find!

I found 4 axe heads on my property within a 25 foot diameter area.Only 1 axe head was mark US being for the Federal Troops during the Civil War. I am not far from the battle Kinston NC or Wyse Forks and skirmishers in the Snowhill and Greenville NC area the axe heads were authenticated. Metal Detecting is fun

Metal detecting is very fun. My wife and I have been doing it for a while. Gets your blood flowing and your heart pumping when you come across something like that.

There was one major battle in Florida. It happened in Olustee about 40 miles west of Jacksonville. There were smaller engagements, but that was the only significant one. Most of the action in the state was blockade running. There was quite a bit out of the St. Johns river. A Union transport, the 'Maple Leaf' struck a torpedo (mine) in 1864 and sunk in the river. It was never salvaged, but moved by the Army Corps of Engineers and is still there today in about 20 feet of water. It is a national historical landmark so you cannot dive on it plus the river is muddy and dangerous in the area. The artifacts that were recovered, along with parts of the ship are in the Jacksonville Museum of Science and History.


The button is Navy and looks similar to NA112 in Alpheus Albert's book "Record of American Uniform and Historical Buttons" which along with Daniel Binder's update book are considered the bibles of Civil War button collecting. It is a little cruder and may be a contract or C.S. out of England. You may want to contact William Leigh at www.civilwarbuttons.com. He is one of the more knowledgeable on these.
