About a year ago, I had purchased an Al Demaree card of George Blaeholder on ebay. It's a pretty rare set from 1934 and I only had one other in my collection, so I grabbed this one for a good price. The other day, I was looking through Frank Slocum's book, "Classic Baseball Cards" from 1986, which I hadn't looked at in years. When I came to the spread featuring Al Demaree cards, lo and behold, the Blaeholder card that I had purchased was the one that was photographed for this book... it has distinctive discoloring that popped out to me.

That's neat. Those cards are hard to find. Was there a picture of the Lefty Grove card in that book? If so, can you please post it? Maybe I ended up with that one.

I just checked - Grove was not in the book. There were only 32 Demaree’s pictured in the book; in 1986 there were not that many examples known and only a small portion of the checklist was known. There was a find in the 90s I think, that filled in a lot of the checklist.

Is Frank Slocum still around? It would be cool to learn how they assembled/photographed/compiled the images for the book.

Shanty Hogan is in the book, but not sure if it’s yours. Some of the white border margins look a little different.
According to the acknowledgments, the cards shown in the book came from the collections of Larry Yasger, Bill Hongach, Robert Lifson, Bill Himmelman and Renata Galasso and the Hall of Fame. |

Here's one of my Lefty Grove die cuts. It took me years to find one of these.

Love it, Brad! I checked out your website and you’ve got a great collection. Very cool that you’re related to Lefty.
This is a tough, tough set. I have a copy of The Sports Collectors Bible from 1979 and there were only 14 subjects known then. I think I read somewhere that Jefferson Burdick only had two in his collection. |
