Hi -
Trying to determine whether the Stubbs' "white" variation is a pure white variation - so that the team name appears as they do for a team like the White Sox or Tigers - or whether it's more of a very light gray. Scans on e-bay and elsewhere don't seem clear on this. The difference for me is that if it is pure white - more likely a design error than a printing defect - I'll want it for my collection. Thanks! |

The one I have looks all white to me. See if this image helps you clarify...notice the name area is also white, but grey on the regular sample card

I just did an ebasy search to see what you meant and the one that came up does not even appear to be the same "error" as the card I have. It could be that some people really don't know what to look for and just assume they have an error. Seems to happen with stuff from time to time.

Several 1989 Topps Dodgers have been listed in the Gilkeson guide since 1989 as having been found with a white banner. I believe it was four players. Typically what I see sold as such are very light gray banners, not stark white like the Stubbs example posted above.
Now that said, the examples I have seen do seem to only affect the four players originally listed. In other words, the light gray is very close to white on the errors, where other dodger subjects only seem to have various gray shades, nothing close to white. I believe Stubbs was originally one of the listed players. For whatever reason, Beckett decided to list his card and not the others.

Thanks to all for the insights.
2 questions - what is this Gilkeson Guide and how does one acquire it? Also - It would seem, then, that what happened in the case of Stubbs and the other affected Dodgers, WASN'T that the cards were shipped to the printer with white sections (such as the Tigers and White Sox cards in the same set were), but rather the cause of the variations was something to do with what happened at the printers/in the printing process. Does that sound most plausible? |

I do not know if Dick still publishes his Variations book. He first put it out in the mid 80's, I think, and updated it for several years. It covered football and basketball as well.
But there is currently an effort underway by several people to update his work. I started a thread here in the pre 80 section with a link to it. It is available on line and free, and contributions and additions are welcomed https://net54baseball.com/showthread.php?t=277792 Also, another poster here, brightair, has some very extensive checklists of baseball variations, although I can not recall what year he stops his listings https://sites.google.com/site/richar...riations-lists And Dylan, Jacksoncoupage, has some great listings for more modern cards on his Junk Wax Gems site https://r.search.yahoo.com/_ylt=A0ge...g0yoZdh5Xhh9o- Last edited by ALR-bishop; 06-02-2020 at 07:12 AM. |

I think it's been at least 25-30 years since Dick last did his works. As you have seen, I've been happy to add legit variations to the COMC data base in the past few years so keep them coming. And I'll keep adding them.
