Default BGS holders

I don't follow TPGing as much as I used to, and I have a couple of questions about the different iterations of BGS holders over the years. I thought this would be an easy Google search, but I didn't find what I was searching for. I know PSA has gone from no hologram to hologram to lighthouse, but I don't know as much about BGS.

Are the older BGS holders the ones with the four sub grades, and have those older holders been more or less likely to hold trimmed cards of any significant player (all the way from Cobb to Trout)? Or has BGS had problems detecting trims throughout, thus nullifying any concern over which type of BGS holder one's card resides in?

Thanks in advance. I am genuinely curious as to your observations, as I see cards in BGS holders with the four sub grades and holders with no sub grades.

As far as I know, BGS holders (1980-current) holders all had subgrades until about a year ago when they started offering no subgrades to bulk submitters who wanted to pay less or get their orders quickers.

BVG (pre-1980 cards) lost their subgrades maybe 5 years ago.

If you want to read the SSI, Robert Block, or Mohawk threads, you can probably see how long BGS has been grading trimmed cards.

One thing about the Beckett holders, they are virtually impossible to put back together once cracked.

As for sub grades, I think they are a good idea. But I also like the idea of Authentic Unaltered as the ONLY grade. LOL .....kind of takes out the whose is bigger question....as well as much of the money aspect. So it won't be a go.

Default Beckett

I think of Beckett as the place to send refractor stuff. I don't have many Beckett holders, but I would buy any card I needed no matter what kind of holder it's in. My favorite is penny sleeve and top loader, followed by cardsaver, then PSA (only b/c the slabs are thinner than SGC and Beckett). Here's one from today's mailbag that looks like it was graded a while ago. I'm leaving it as it sits, even though I think it would present better in a toploader. Rob

Default Beckett / PSA Penny Sleeve

If I may piggyback on this thread, does anyone know what the reasoning is behind BGS and some PSA tobacco cards being put in a penny sleeve, and then sonically sealed? I have some PSA T206s that are in the penny sleeve and some not. I was just curious as I don't really care for the look with the sleeve myself.

Thank you and sorry if posting this question here is not good form.

No worries here. That's actually a good question. I don't know the answer...

BGS does it with every card, so at least they're consistent.

PSA does it when the card doesn't fit the holder perfectly and they either need to hold it in place. Sometimes they do it when the card is fragile and might get more damaged in the holder. You can make the request on a submission (or a reslabbing) that they not use "mylar sleeves" but it is up to the person who is actually putting your cards in the holder.

Thank you John! That makes sense.
