I am stoked to kick off the new month!
In the old days, it seemed to me there were a trio of 1967 high numbers that were just nearly impossible to get (meaning way too expensive). They were Brooksie, Mike Shannon and the coveted Red Sox team card. Could be the Saux were in the conversation because of their near magical run in '67, but who knows if these three are still considered the end all/be all short prints they were considered to be at the time. Either way, I am happy to have finally upgraded my #604... 1967redsox604psa8.jpg And I got these three variations (1962 Topps #150 'green tint' and a pair of 1973 Topps #280 'band aid' cards) signed by Al 'Mr. Tiger' Kaline himself. Frickin' awesome... kalineautographs2.jpg

Why is it though, that some '67 high numbers are considered "easy" and even in nice shape can be had for a few bucks? For example #608 Rich Nye / John Upham. I have one in NM condition that I paid like $4 for delivered...

Another very difficult (and very attractive...) card in that series is the #580 Rocky Colavito.

Went to a flea market this weekend and picked up a lot of around 200 cards from 1960-1974 including many high #s from the 60s-72 for 15 cents apiece (paid $35 total for that lot).
Also picked up this 56 Billy for $5. It was that price because it's OC and has a very faint hairline wrinkle (the crease doesn't go all the way through to the back). I'm not working on the 56 set, so I'll be moving it. Not sure about the others. Might use them as trade bait. ![]()

I grabbed up a couple more high grade 1967 Laughlins. I love how snug they are in the SGC holders. It's a thing of beauty! In PSA slabs, they slide around like pucks in a rink.

Upgraded another wicked tough 1971 Fleer World Series #71 'update' Laughlin card (sadly, it features my Mets being unduly dismissed)...

Two lots of 1953 Topps commons arrived today as I begin trying to assemble the complete 274-card set. I started with 53 cards -- including Mays, Feller, Wynn, Kiner and Mathews. Today's haul netted 81 cards I didn't have before.

After having taken some time away from the hobby, I'm getting back into the thick of things, and working on the 52 Topps series again. I'm taking a step back though, away from graded cards, and going for raws instead that I can assemble in an album. I've picked up a few commons here and there, but the doozy is I scored a beautiful Pafko black back. Perfect centering, and one of the best I've seen outside of a holder. I have no idea what it would grade, but I don't really intend to submit it, and just got it for the eye appeal:

Thanks! I'm rather torn as to what direction I want to go. The first time around, I attempted the entire 407 (minus the Mantle) which proved really daunting. Too big of a bite, in hindsight. So I'm looking to build something smaller, but can't decide what. One thought is working on a run of Dodgers players, which is an amazing group of players in the set, and none are prohibitively expensive, except perhaps for the Robinson.
The other thought, which I'm leaning towards, is doing a short run of cards 1-80. Another thought I've had is trying for a master short run, getting black and red backs, the Page/Sain error, and some of the color varieties. But I"m definitely enjoying buying raw cards. Much cheaper than slabbed, and it's nice to not sweat grades so much, and focus more on visual appeal. |

I still watch/look for those 3 cards but of course trying to find them either in the 3-4 range or on the cheap is getting tougher all the time. I have a mix of black/red backs and have also been keeping an eye out for those that I don't have in those colors, plus some cards that I think need updating due to their condition. With needing so many high number cards, including Mathews, Campy, Wilhelm to name a few, it is highly unlikely I'll ever finish the set. Good luck with whatever rout you choose. It's definitely a great set and worth collecting, imo.

I guess prohibitively expensive is relative.
The 52 set is loaded with Dodgers high numbers, so aside from the Robby, Campy and Reese who are all a pretty penny, it makes for a really expensive team set in my eyes. One of the only post war Dodgers team sets I have not completed for the team (and that pesky Rose RC for the 63 T set). Quote:

The Franco presented a challenge I was not expecting! The color strike and overall surfaces were important to me. Seems it's either drab or colorful with extraneous distractions. This one will satisfy me for awhile, I believe.
