Default SOLD! Shoeless Joe Jackson 1918 Steel Yard Ball Team Panoramic

For Sale:

Well.....not sure how to describe this one. First, it is a booklet from 1918, called The Rumbler, put out by the Reading PA Steel Casting Company during World War One.

If you are familiar with the story Shoeless Joe opted to go to the Shipyard to help the War cause rather then overseas to fight. Comiskey was not a fan of that decision and said Joe would not be allowed back on the White Sox. Had he stuck to his guns Joe may have then be forced to play for another team in 1919 and the Sox probably would not have made the World Series and history would have been altered. But Comiskey was no fool, he needed JJ.

Back to the item at hand. When you thumb through the pages you will find a pull out that is AMAZING!! A panoramic of the 2 teams playing that day in September 1919, and Shoeless Joe was joined by Babe Ruth and Rogers Hornsby was on the other team. (thanks to other NET54ers for finding the articles of that days game, not included, but shown for your viewing pleasure). What a showcase must have been put on that day. This panoramic captures what I believe is Shoeless Joe dead center, and it may or may not be Ruth next to him. If not next to him he's somewhere there that day, just hard to make out faces.

Unique possibly one of a kind item as I've never seen another. The staples holding the pull out in could easily be removed without damaging the picture and the panoramic would look great in a frame, just throw a Ruth, Jackson and Hornsby signature in and you've got yourself a nice display piece ; )

An actual team photo from that game went for over 4K at auction:

$200 shipped Paypal Friends and Family (again newspaper articles not included, they were just pulled from the internet)

Look at those spacious dugouts, you think today's players would put up with those.....and I love the smokestacks in the background. Very neat picture.

Thanks and no problem......always good to add a one-of-a-kind period Shoeless Joe piece to a collection.....and rare that Ruth is a throw in here.

Murph,

I do know that booklets like this were published during that time and I personally have never seen this particular one before. Very interesting find for sure. I'm very familiar with the game in question, but again, I have never seen this particular booklet or the photos contained therein. Let me know if you have any other questions I might be able to answer for you.
