It's been a long time since I've posted a card on here, so I thought I'd ask for posts of your N173's. Although we see them from time to time, I feel they are still underappreciated. Most have only a handful of examples or less. What great cards. Here's my favorite, which hits all the buttons for me; Baltimore subjects, dual player card, super rare Dog's Head brand.

Ball on a string, piece of paper for the base - gotta love the old-time studio photo shoots!

Seeing some of these beauties reminds me of my first encounter with the Old Judge Cabinet cards. It took me a while to find out about 19th century cards after I started collecting in high school. Gradually, by the very late 1980's/early 1990's I found out about the Willow Grove show. It was perfect timing for me as I was in college and had no restraints to take a small road trip.
I distinctly remember seeing some N173's there and, afterwards, encountering a teenage boy riding his bike who happened upon a couple guys making a deal for an N173 (it was common back then to "wheel and deal" even outside the show). The kid said had had many of them at his house a few miles away and was encouraged to bring them in. The next day he returned with a whole box of them, I'll guess there were at least 50 and maybe up to 100 there (it's been about 30 years so I can't be sure how many). Not sure who ended up with them but I'm pretty sure the kid left there with cash and not the cards. I sure wish I would have sat down and at least looked through them all. But, I can say that about alot of the material I saw glances of there. The quality and vastness of the items was just incredible. Anyway, those last couple of N173 pics just took me back in time. |

I do love the cabinets . . .
Jay, love seeing the supersized version of the N172 Ward. So what is that on his left shoulder? Impossible to study on the N172, but perhaps you can make it out on the N173? Here are a couple of my favorites. Presenting the best offensive and defensive catcher of the 1870s (Deacon White) and the best defensive catcher of the 1880s (Charlie Bennett). Bennett was often among the league leaders in offense but tough to compete with Ewing & Kelly - if you call them catchers ![]() Bennett is among the more common N173s but nearly all of them have "DETROIT" removed from uniform as they were all issued in 1889 when with Boston. Glad to have an early version in which DETROIT is still present.

"Sliding" Billy. Even though the advertising has been cut off, this is still one of my favorite card images! (And my only N173).

My only one for now, but a nice companion piece to my Johnston pose run. I would like to add at least one N173 to all my player runs. Great cards everyone!

How about this guy—the only known boxing N173 (Australian issue of Slavin). Although N173s were issued as a premium in Australia, no cigarette pack insert list of cards that could be acquired has ever been found.
