This little guy played "small-ball".....but, was a Manager with "big-ball" visions. Huggins had a keen insight for talent. In 1919, he persuaded Col. Jacob
Ruppert (NY Yankees owner) to acquire Babe Ruth. Huggins had the foresight that Ruth's power game would dramatically revolutionize Baseball. Babe Ruth's free spirit clashed with Huggins' conservative style of playing the game. However, Huggins (more or less) gave Ruth free reign. Until 1925. The 1925 season was Ruth's worst, he was really out of shape (weighed 245 lbs). Huggins read him the riot act ("shape up, or ship out"). During the Winter of '25, Ruth joined a Fitness Club in NYC. By the Spring of 1926, Ruth had trimmed down to 205 lbs. and was in great physical shape. It was a regiment which Ruth stuck to for the rest of his career; and, it paid off. If you track Ruth's performance from 1926 to 1933, it exceeds his per- formance during his younger years (1919 - 1925). And, Miller Huggins deserves a lot of credit for this. Ruth and Huggins....perfect together. So, show off some of your Miller Huggins items. I will start this show with these cards...... ![]() . ![]() And, here's my T205 Huggins A=B=C=D connection (any help finding his DRUM card will be greatly appreciated). . ![]() ![]() TED Z . |
